Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Story
Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind....

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

A Cursed Family?
I thought book two of the "Towry" series was as good as the first one. Anne Towry has become the mistress of Whitehall Manor, and she worked to change the family's reputation. Things were not working out quite the way she hoped. The story was good. I liked the complicated mystery that threaded throughout the book. I just had a hard time connecting with the characters. Mackenzie Welz's narration was fine as she was easy to understand. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

the curse of whitehall manor
The book was good. There is so many real and unreal things trying to take everything away from her. Ready for the next book.

Have you considered going rental, Anne?
The story is still suspenseful with more crappy dead Towry relatives but Anne is somewhat less relatable in this one.
I ain’t going nowhere though! Bring on Volume 3!

Sad but so good
Not as good as the first book, but a must read. I listened to the audio version of this book and it was nice to hear the same narrator as the first book. She's really good and she became the voice of Ann Towry. I'm glad they used the same person as the narrator. I don't know if it would have worked if it was another voice. This is the continuation of the Towry curse. In this book you will find out all the gory details of this cursed family. There is rape, and incest involved so beware if that's a sensitive topic, but the storyline is really good. Pires does a wonderful job pulling you into the story and into Ann Towry's life. I can't wait to listen to the last book of this series. It leaves you wanting more.

Love the Horror!
This is another great book by L.V. Pires. Terrifying and atmospheric. Anne Towry is trying desperately to hang on to her manor home and relationship but there are so many real and unreal things trying to take everything from her. Add to that a horrible family curse that seeks her out and is determined to destroy her and you have the making of a nightmarish story. I'll definitely be sleeping with the lights on tonight. A perfect read for October. I can't wait for the next book.

A Great Haunt
Another great installment in the Whitehall Manor series. I can't wait to read book three. This is a great tale of haunting, especially for the spooky season. The writing is excellent. The plot is well thought out and the characters are interesting and well-developed. You could read this without having read Book1, but I recommend starting at the beginning. You will appreciate this story more and will have two great books to read instead of just one.

Family secrets even more twisted
Received as an audio review from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Gorgeously narrated by Mackenzie Welz, The Curse of Whitehall Manor harrowingly deepens the twisted secrets buried within Anne Towry's family that will leave you with shivers. After experiencing so much sadness and pain, Anne is determined to make Whitehall the talk of the town you want to hear through a much anticipated charity event. At the same Anne discovers the fears and joys of becoming a new mother; but this well deserved happiness cannot last forever as once an old journal of a dead ancestor comes to light, Anne becomes frightened that J. B. Towry demented desire to lay claim to the mansion will be fulfilled. And nothing or no one will stand in this ghost's warpath; forcing Anne, Teran and even their trusted servants to battle shadows and their own sanity to keep this dark past where it should belong.
A great series that's keeps getting better with each installment.
Highly recommended.

Dissapointing Sequal
I really like the first book in the Towry series but I must say that I found this book somewhat disappointing. While the first book set up an intriguing premise filled with potential, this sequel fell short of my expectations.
The story continues to follow Anne Towry as she navigates the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of Whitehall Manor. The promise of uncovering more about the Towry family's legacy of madness and the mysteries of the manor kept me turning the pages. However, the plot felt repetitive at times, and the suspense that was so gripping in the first book seemed to wane as the story progressed.
One of the strengths of L.V. Pires' writing is her ability to create a chilling and immersive setting, and this book is no exception. The descriptions of the manor and the haunting echoes of the past are vivid and atmospheric. Unfortunately, the character development did not match the quality of the setting. Anne's struggles and emotional turmoil felt underdeveloped, making it hard for me to fully connect with her journey.
Overall, it is a decent read with some genuinely spooky moments, but it didn't quite live up to the standards set by the first book in the series. While it has its flaws, it may still be worth a read for fans of the genre who are looking for a quick, atmospheric horror story.

Interesting continuation
This was an interesting take on the curse and where it came from. You really need to read the first book in the series for most of this to make sense. Still not thrilled with the narrator. Didn't like the characters as much this time either. Why was so much of the history and reason for the curse coming from letters? That was just disappointing. Wasn't thrilled with the ending either. The first book spent more time developing characters and getting to know them. This one spent time on the upcoming auction and remodeling of the home. Not sure if I'll listen to the 3rd one.
I received the audiobook from StoryOrigin and this is my honest review.
