Publisher's summary

Number-one New York Times best-selling author of the beloved Cynster novels, Stephanie Laurens takes you on a fresh journey with the Adventurers Quartet, a daring Regency-era adventure laced with mystery, tropical heat, and passionate romance.

He has something to prove.

Captain Caleb Frobisher, hedonistic youngest son of a seafaring dynasty, wants to be taken seriously. Seizing the next leg of the covert mission his brothers are pursuing, he acts decisively and effectively in securing the mission's objectives. But responsibility has taken root, and he remains in the jungle to ensure the mission's ultimate goal.

She will risk everything.

Katherine Fortescue fled a life of poverty and came to Freetown as a governess, only to be kidnapped and forced to oversee the child workforce at a mine. Guarded by well-armed, well-trained mercenaries, the captives have lost all hope of escape. Then Katherine meets a handsome man - a captain - and he brings the sweet promise of rescue.

Together they will face the future.

The sadistic mercenary who runs the mine has other plans, but Caleb's true strength lies in extracting advantage from adversity, and through the clashes that follow, he becomes the leader he was always destined to be. The sort of man Katherine can trust - with her body, with her life, and with her love.

Race with the Adventurers Quartet as these passionate daredevils lead the way to the stunning and dramatic conclusion.

Very enjoyable series

The youngest of all the brothers decides to go on his own. Using his brothers research on the slavers, he decides to go to explore and find out what is occurring at the slavers camp and report his findings once he returns to England. That is until he becomes a victim of the slavers and finds love at the camp. Steve West does an excellent job in his performance. I enjoy the way he uses his voice for the different characters.

If you’re reading the whole series you have to slog through this one.

I recommend that you read the first half of the book then skip to the last chapter or two. In spite of listening at 1.5 speed and fast forwarding through a lot, it was so tedious. I’m expecting volume 4 to be much better.

Great story

Great continuation of the story. Love the way Steve West reads the story; he put life into the characters that Stephanie has created.

The most boring ever

I enjoy Laurens. She writes intelligent, logical and interesting romance. And she is one of the most talented technical writers in the genre. But this story was boring and way too slow. I wanted to scream every time I heard the phrase "we have to open the second tunnel" or "we have to monitor production." Who cares after the first time you've said it?! You don't need to say it a hundred times. It's like the same phrases and conversations were repeated over and over to up the page count.

But the most disappointing aspect of this book is that there was NO tension between them - NONE. No conflict, no danger, no spark, no sparing - nada, zip, zilch, nothing. And neither were interesting characters - absolutely nothing special about either of them. His friend that came along for the adventure was more interesting than the hero!

The second book in this series was okay - not her best but at least held my attention. I hope the last one - about the oldest brother, who has been set up to be the most ruthless and dangerous - will make up for this one.

One last note: the pace was too slow - maybe because the story was so boring. I tried listening to it in fast mode, but that was too much "chipmunks" style and I couldn't do it. Don't know if it was the narrator's fault, but I kept willing him to talk faster so I could hurry up and be done with the book.

Good background plot, stupid romance

This book was interesting and reasonably well written at the beginning. The setting was unique and the story advanced at a pace that kept my attention. It would have probably stayed a good book if a romance hadn’t been forced upon it to the point of ludicrous improbability and a complete lack of believability. The romance was plainly unbelievable and if I’d been reading it rather than listening I wouldn’t have been able to continue throughout the innumerable eye rolls the story inspired. By the 2/3s mark I was so disgusted by the rampant stupidity that I couldn’t keep listening. It’s a shame because the narrator was excellent and managed to read it all with a straight face which would have required peak talent. I’m annoyed that the romance ruined the book because I really did want to find out how it ended, just not enough to risk my sanity.
