About this listen

Beginning with The Skystone, the first in his riveting Camulod Chronicles, Jack Whyte has embarked on an ambitious and remarkable re-telling of the Arthurian cycle, giving us a fresh and compelling take on a story that has been beloved for centuries. The Eagle brings us at last to the heart of the tale, the creation of fabled Camelot and the love story that enshrined its glory. Whyte takes us into the minds and lives of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot, three astonishing but fallible people who were bound together by honor, loyalty, and love. Three who created the glory that was Britain's shining dream…and, some say, caused its downfall. The Gaulish nobleman Clothar - known in our time as Lancelot - is drawn to the young High King's court by tales of honor and nobility, where he meets a man whose love of law matches his own. More, he finds in Arthur a life-long friend whose dream of uniting the people of Britain in peace Clothar embraces. And Clothar meets Arthur's queen, a wondrous beauty whose passion and ideals match those of her husband. Together they work to bring Arthur's dream to life.

But dark forces rise in opposition to Arthur's plans for creating this noble island nation and it is hard to tell friend from foe in the swirling chaos that ensues. Many tales have been told of the dream that shined and died. This one will astonish even the most jaded.

Epic

Even though I knew how it had to end I was Still Heart Broken at the end. I fell in love with these Characters and Hated the thought that the Dream would die.

One-of-a-kind

If you're someone who commutes a lot or has a job that allows you to spend a lot of time wearing earbuds, then this story is for you. I was pleased to find a series of this magnitude that didn't include magic of some nature. Great storytelling that didn't rely on a lot of battle scenes keep me interested. Great series.

Surprise

Surprisingly the narrator actually improved. It only took five epic length novels and hundreds of hours of audio time but it happened. The distinction between major characters was still minimal and his voices are still grating, pretentious and/or idiotic but an improvement is an improvement.

The story was excellent. A truly impressive take on the Arthurian legends. In my opinion, a far more likely scenario than the dominant story but whatever, it was still very entertaining, thoughtful and fun. Anyone who is interested in Arthur would do well to include these books in their collection.

The Eagle

Excellent story telling. The author has taken us further into the lore of Merlin, his Knights and Guinevere.

Did not disappoint

After having read the books years ago, I enjoyed listening to the audio just as much.

All good things must end....

I am of no words at the moment. We all know that all good things and good stories must come to a end.......but......I was not ready. A fitting end I guess to a wonderful series

Mediocre Ending to a GREAT Series

Where does The Eagle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The series overall comes in near the top, but this final book falls victim to what so many series final volume does, its disappointing. Most of the action takes place "off screen" and our main character should have been Arthur himself. The worst thing is the ending is so abrupt, and lacked feeling. Very disappointing.

If you’ve listened to books by Jack Whyte before, how does this one compare?

I listened to the previous 8 volumes and this is the worst, sadly.

What about Kevin Pariseau’s performance did you like?

I loved Kevin's performance. He did an amazing job for all the books in the series.

Who was the most memorable character of The Eagle and why?

The narrator, as you would expect, but the narrator should have been someone around Arthur. This is HIS story, and this book relegated him to a "bit" character.

Any additional comments?

I read these books many years ago and had forgotten how bad the end was. It's really sad, because the previous books in the series were excellent stuff, truly some of the best historical fiction I have ever read. That said, even though you KNOW the ending to the legend, or perhaps BECAUSE you know the end... you expect more from this final book. If you have ready 1-8, you might as well read this final book, but honestly... you don't have to. You know how it ends, and this book does nothing to personalize or dramatize the ending at all.
