Publisher's summary

Following his acclaimed New York Times best seller Did You Ever Have a Family, Bill Clegg returns with a “delicate, deeply observed, and deftly crafted” (Nickolas Butler, author of Shotgun Lovesongs) second novel about the complicated bonds and breaking points of friendship, the corrosive forces of secrets, the heartbeat of longing, and the redemption found in forgiveness.

A retired widow in rural Connecticut wakes to an unexpected visit from her childhood best friend whom she hasn’t seen in 49 years.

A man arrives at a Pennsylvania hotel to introduce his estranged father to his newborn daughter and finds him collapsed on the floor of the lobby.

A 67-year-old taxi driver in Kauai receives a phone call from the mainland that jars her back to a traumatic past.

These seemingly disconnected lives come together as half-century-old secrets begin to surface. It is in this moment that Bill Clegg reminds us how choices - to connect, to betray, to protect - become our legacy.

"Written in lyrical, beautiful prose that makes even waking up seem like a poetic event" (Good Morning America), this novel is a feat of storytelling, capturing 60 years within the framework of one fateful day.

Ugh

Dry, boring, nothing happens, everyone sucks.
It’s a story about a revelation. Many revelations. None of which matter to any of the characters

Just Okay

Nothing really happened in this book. There was no conclusion and it was a struggle to stay engaged with the story. It was just okay.

Storytelling at its best ...

I have and will continue to read everything written by Bill Clegg. His memoirs and novels beautifully capture the human condition with stories that unfold into what can only be described as a knowing acceptance of what remains.

I hope Mr. Clegg continues to narrate his books for Audible — a moving storyteller.

One of my very favourite books!

After having enjoyed some marvellous narrations on audible, I was taken aback by the author's own narration. However, it did not take long to understand how this narration showcased the beautiful prose and writing style: never sentimental or overly dramatic; just incredibly well written. I highly recommend this Listen and/or book.

Audio is not good for this book

The audio is very monotone and hard to follow. I highly recommend reading this book instead of listening.

Mediocre

I enjoyed the writing of the book. I kept reading hoping for more. However more never appeared. The novel seemed unfinished. There was no clear cut ending and each character's story was unfinished.
