About this listen
An arranged marriage, 1484.
Emeline knows she has no voice in her marriage, so she counts herself fortunate when her betrothed turns out to be a charming man with a heart of gold. But before the wedding, flames consume everything, and the murdered body of Emeline's fiancé is discovered.
Sparks fly when Emeline finds herself marrying the younger brother…
Nicholas is tired of living in his brother's shadow. Forced to marry a woman who would rather he fill his brother's coffin isn't helping. But just when he thinks his wedding day couldn't get worse, fire ravages once more. It becomes apparent that the murderer's rampage is far from over.
Can an unlikely couple find their way on a trail of political intrigue and a murderous conspiracy?
As murder and mayhem plague their lives, Nicholas must hide a secret mission behind his actions… even from his own wife. But when Emeline embarks on her own investigation, he realizes he has underestimated the fiery beauty. Determined to unmask the murderous culprit, Emeline naively takes on the sleuth's role and finds there may be more to her husband than meets the eye.
England's fate hangs in the balance…
The Flame Eater is an enthralling historical mystery with multifaceted characters, fast-paced twists and turns, and apple codlings to die for. This rich tapestry of life in the 15th century is perfect for fans of CJ Sansom, SW Perry, SJ Parris, and SG Maclean and does not contain sexual content.

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. Story
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

It's a story you think you know: the age-old tale of "star-cross'd lovers"; two families at war; a romance, so pure and absolute, fated for a tragic end. It's a story so thoroughly embedded in our culture, and so frequently retold. Yet, nothing captures the spark, the possibility, and the surprise of Shakespeare's work quite like this....

Story
England, 1346: For Thomas Blackstone, the choice is easy - dance on the end of a rope for a murder he did not commit, or take up his war bow and join the king's invasion. As he fights his way across northern France, Blackstone learns the brutal lessons of war - from the terror and confusion of his first taste of combat, to the savage realities of siege warfare.

I love how the story develops and how it ties in to true historical events

Oh that was long, but a real twist at the end.
The story a bit sappy romance. The story a bit disjointed and rambling, but by chapter The narrator was wonderful as usual.

Worth the credit!
So many hours of enjoying an engrossing story with excellent narration! Not for the faint of heart. (I admit to advancing the story in a certain spot). But this did not diminish the story, or my enjoyment. So happy to have found this author. Gildart Jackson does an excellent job of narration. A book I've listed as "listen again' .

Gritty authenticity, clearly the author has plenty of reenacting experience.
Amazing complexity, plot-wise. Well-researched and authentic over all, while still giving women more period credibility than usual. Gritty, but retaining romantic structure.
Very glad I tripped into this author.
