Publisher's summary

What do you do when you have nothing to give and everything to lose?

Twin goblin princes Shi’chen and A’bbni Er-Ha’sen did not ever plan to take the Emperor’s throne. Older twin Shi’chen is a military prodigy, and younger twin A’bbni is studying to be a physician. But when their father attempts and fails to overthrow their cousin, the murderous crown prince, the brothers are accused of taking part in a rebellion they know nothing about.

Forced to flee for their lives, the twins find that not everything is what it seems in the goblin empire of Hanenea’a. With the help of only a half-elf sailor and a handful of nobles, the brothers must confront the Emperor and his supporters, risking everyone they love for one chance to save it all.

The Goblin Twins is a debut m/m non-magic fantasy novel with romance from Kit Barrie.

This is the first book of The Goblin Twins duology, and the first of a collection of stories set in the lands of Hanenea’a and Kendarin. It has all the angst but does have a Happy For Now ending with no cliff-hanger. It does not contain twincest.

Please note that this story contains a heavy content warning, with early on-page trauma and violence, and ongoing references to these events throughout. It may not be suitable for everyone, and listener discretion is advised. Please visit kitbarrie.com for more information regarding sensitive material in this book.

Mixed bag

Pros: more plot than sex, some subtle gender diversity without hitting me over the head, not twincest thank god.

Cons: it’s kind of all over the place. The brothers’ relationship comes off as romantic even though it’s not supposed to I don’t think. Which makes the love interest a weird addition. Is it a love triangle? Is it normal jealousy for the attention of a friend? And where did the insta love come from anyway it’s out of the blue like the author was writing and suddenly decided we needed a romance. Doctor bro is written as being kind of weak and needing protection (while protesting that he doesn’t) and soldier bro is like an overbearing controlling lover but wait they’re twins not lovers. And I can’t keep track of the names. If you’re going to make up a language make the names sound different! I also can’t stand in books where the good guys have a chance to end the bad guys but they don’t for dumb reasons. This book can’t decide if it’s wholesome or dark.

Overall it’s worth a listen but don’t pay too close attention it’ll be more enjoyable. Squint.

enjoyed it - solid 4 stars

Kit Barrie is an unknown author to me - I picked up The Goblin Twins purely because it's narrated by Greg Boudreaux and as a narrator, (in my opinion) he can do no wrong and I know I can trust in his judgement when it comes to content.

📖 Story comment: I was thoroughly delighted with the Goblin Twins, it has a good pace, likeable characters, and a good flow. The characters and worldbuilding are well developed, the relationship between the brothers was endearing and there was pleanty of action and adventure to keep the story moving at a good pace.

I hope there are more adventures planned for this duo.

🎧 Narrator comment: Greg Boudreaux is a master at his craft! He suits the characters, has good timing, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. As always, an enjoyable performance and he bought the book to life.

loved it

I loved this book. Greg Boudreaux's voice really brings this story to life. The Goblin twins Shi’chen and A’bbni Er-Ha’sen are accused of trying to take the Emperor’s throne after their fathers plan failed. They didn't know about their father's plans. They flee Hanenea’a with help from those in the rebellion. Will they be able to do what their father could not and overthrow their evil cousin saving everyone they love?
