About this listen

A charming leader must rally her friends to take on soldiers, spies, and an evil duke as this LitRPG adventure for Dungeons & Dragons fans continues.

A Worldwalker in the Great Game, Kandis Hammond has built her character on charisma, social skills, and illusion magic, garnering her many roles in the town of Talnier, specifically secretary of the Town Council, member of the Adventurers' Guild, and head of the local bank. And with the town preparing to expand to support its growing population, her agenda is jam-packed. There are diplomatic meetings, budgets, and dungeon builds . . . as well as mysterious notes from fugitive elven bards. Plus, she's still figuring out which god is her patron.

But all that comes to a screeching halt when Kandis uncovers a disturbing plot helmed by a power-hungry duke. Who knows what he has planned for her? Suddenly, everything she's worked for could be destroyed.

Now, to save Talnier—and prevent its formerly booming population from taking a nosedive—Kandis must quickly assemble her team of adventurers and an arsenal of spells. If she's learned anything during her short time in this strange world, it's that there are some things she can't do on her own . . .

A side story

I like this series. This book feels like a side quest though. Also what fantasy race has an Australian accent?

A little too much “real world”

By the end, I was getting aggravated by the flashbacks to the “real” world. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book. Though not a lot happened in this one.

Candace always being the hero.

I would have thought that Candace should’ve shown more grief over the loss of Cutter since she kinda took over guardianship of him.

Kinda Filler, Cardboard Characters

This book spends most of its time wrapping up loose ends from previous books. On its own I wouldn’t have a problem with that, but the characters aren’t engaging enough for me to be invested.

Only our MC has anything resembling depth, the companion characters have nothing. Occasionally they’ll say something, but it’s only to fill space in a conversation. They each have one or two traits, but they are never permitted to exist beyond a rock for the MC to bounce ideas off.

The pacing is an issue too. This book moves at a breakneck speed. Lots of things happen, but we don’t get to digest them before we’re off to the next plot point. One of the side characters dies in this book and it’s brushed over by the next chapter and isn’t brought up again till the last couple chapters.

I don’t recommend this book.
