About this listen

A devious tale of psychological suspense so irresistible that it prompts Entertainment Weekly to ask, “Is The Kind Worth Killing the next Gone Girl?”

From one of the hottest new thriller writers, Peter Swanson, a name you may not know yet (but soon will), this is his breakout novel in the best-selling tradition of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train - now a major movie directed by Agnieszka Holland.

In a tantalizing set-up reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith’s classic Strangers on a Train.... On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché.

But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda for what she’s done. Lily, without missing a beat, says calmly, “I’d like to help.” After all, some people are the kind worth killing, like a lying, stinking, cheating spouse....

Back in Boston, Ted and Lily’s twisted bond grows stronger as they begin to plot Miranda's demise. But there are a few things about Lily’s past that she hasn’t shared with Ted, namely her experience in the art and craft of murder, a journey that began in her very precocious youth.

Suddenly these co-conspirators are embroiled in a chilling game of cat and mouse, one they both cannot survive...with a shrewd and very determined detective on their tail.

Bad choice of narrator

I loved this story so much but I can’t understand why they chose the narrator that they did for Ted. It was such a poor choice.

wow! twisty and twisted

senseless anger and vengeance... I'm sure they'll make this one into a movie just so they can show the plotting of the very bad women.

Actually quite good with an original story

I was hesitant of this book due to reviews of ted’s narrator and some other little grievances over minuscule things. But I thought it was a really good book. Finished it in no time - the switch of narrators was well done along with descriptions. Even though some parts were repeated through different perspectives they each offered new information. I would highly recommend this book. Even if you don’t absolutely love it, you still really like it.

Glad I I gave it a chance

I read quite a few negative reviews but still decided to given it a chance. I am so glad that I did! I usually only listen on my drive to work and back but listened to the entire book in two days! Can’t wait to listen to more of his books

May be a top 5 book for me!

Between the story, writing style and voice performance, I believe I have a new book amongst my favorites.

8/10 Recommend

I agree with other reviewers, the voice of Ted was somewhat off-putting as well as the narrator who over-pronounced her “wh” sounds. The story was good, and the plot twists made it interesting. The ending felt unfinished, but you can tell it’s leading to a sequel.. which I will probably go listen to next! 😁
