Publisher's summary
Twin sisters, divided by envy and magic, set against one another on a fateful Christmas Eve
Light and dark—this is the cursed birthright placed upon Clara and Natasha by their godfather, Drosselmeyer, whose power and greed hold an entire city in his sway. Charming Clara, the favorite, grows into a life of beauty and ease, while ignored and unloved Natasha is relegated to her sister’s shadow.
But the opportunity for revenge announces itself one Christmas Eve, when Drosselmeyer arrives at their family gala with the Nutcracker, an enchanted gift that offers entry into an alternate world: the Kingdom of Sweets.
Following Clara into the glittering land of snow and sugar, Natasha discovers a source of power far greater than Drosselmeyer: the Sugar Plum Fairy, who offers her own wondrous gifts . . . and deadly bargains. But as Natasha unspools the truth about a dark destiny crafted long before her birth, she must reckon with forces both earthly and magical, human and diabolical, and decide to which world she truly belongs.

Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

The Scarlet Letter was written almost two hundred years earlier, but it seems to tell the story of Mia’s mother, Ivy, and their life inside the Community—an oppressive cult in western Massachusetts where contact with the outside world is forbidden. But how could this be? How could Nathaniel Hawthorne have so perfectly captured the pain and loss that Mia carries inside her?

One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Critic reviews
"The famous Christmas ballet takes a sinister turn in Johansen’s spooky retelling... It would be a simple thing to take the outlines of The Nutcracker ballet and make it grim, but Johansen is doing a lot of delicate character work here, primarily around envy, social limitations on women’s choices, and accountability. The world beyond the candy fantasy is satisfyingly creepy but also an effective landscape for exploring what happens when you ignore the rotten core of your deepest desires. An eerie and sophisticated dark fantasy." —Kirkus (starred)
"Johansen transforms a beloved holiday classic into a dark tale of vengeance.... Fans of artistically influenced, realistic historical fiction wrapped in moral allegory will relish Natasha's Nutcracker-adjacent narrative.” —Booklist (starred)
“In this gripping reimagining of the holiday classic, Erika Johansen shatters the sugar plum surface of the original Nutcracker to plunge deep into the shadows beneath. Twins Clara and Natasha are divided at birth by their unexpected godfather, Drosselmeyer, with one twin designated ‘light’ and the other ‘dark.’ But Johansen entwines love and hate, jealousy and pity, vengeance and forgiveness so tightly, it’s impossible to decide which twin to root for. Johansen gives readers the gift of a compelling and richly imagined story that will keep them turning pages until the last, fully realized twist.” —Liz Michalski, author of Darling Girl

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. One peaceful morning, in the small, Puget Sound town of Point Orchards, the lifeless body of Dr. Erin Landry is found hanging from a tree on the property of prodigal son and failed writer, Elijah Leith. Sheriff Jim Godbout’s initial investigation points to an obvious suicide, but upon closer inspection, there seem to be clues of foul play when he discovers that the circumstances of the beautiful doctor’s death were ripped straight from the pages of Elijah Leith’s own novel.

Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Fantastic narration
I’m not someone who particularly enjoys fantasy, but I love The Nutcracker and wanted to give this a try. The book was middle of the road for me, but the audiobook narration I listened to while reading the book was fantastic, one of the best audiobook productions I’ve listened to!

Alice in wonderland meets…… something
This book was not what I expected. It turned and moved so much it didn’t make sense to me. Perhaps I struggled with Candy people, and make believe lands of sugar plumbs and chocolate fountains.
It’s a story of betrayal, murder and jesters, far away magic and make believe lands.
I love a good story that’s off the beaten path. But this was to far off, and a DNF. I just couldn’t do it.

Delectably Immersive
I have been waiting for someone other than Gregory Maguire to attack a retelling of the Nutcracker. Erika Johansen gives a gothic re-telling, that made me want to gorge on chocolate under the Christmas tree while reading.
I sat by the tree, with audio, wrapping gifts. This was a wildly different ride from crying during The Christmas Pig.
This book has a fun sleeping beauty meets nutcracker type of feel. The Nutcracker was a heavy tradition in my childhood that has carried deep into my adult life. I adore the symphony, I enjoy the ballet, and I ADORE all the illustrative versions.
As a kid, all I wanted was to wake up like Clara with my Nutcracker soldier in the Kingdom of sweets. I have always found it enchanting, magical, and mysterious. Johansen's writing felt so perfect. The descriptions were PERFECTION, especially twards the first two chunks of the book.I personally loved her take on the world and found her descriptions magically delicious. The plot as a whole is certainly not what perhaps anyone is asking for, and for that I think this will get rated harsher than perhaps it deserves.
The focus so heavily on twins and the main villain sometimes brought me out of the fantastical world I so deeply desired to be in. The gothic focus was beautifully written, however, it will certainly not be hitting the expectations of most folks who dive in.
All in all, this was a lovely read to sign off the year on. I'm fascinated to see what Johansen writes in the future, she is one I will be watching.

Lovely!
A cerebral retelling of “The Nutcracker” that pulls the reader in without resorting to the cheap tricks of porn or foul language so common in other modern fantasies. The characters were complex and showed growth throughout the book. The narrator was spot on.
