About this listen

The fourth installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”

—The New York Times Book Review

It's rarely a quiet day for the Thursday Murder Club.

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out?

And who will be the last devil to die?

“Skulduggery and laughs abound as our favorite gaggle of amateur-detective retirees tackle drug runners, dodgy antique dealers, art forgers and Battenberg cake recipes.”

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”—New York Times Book Review

“So what is it about the Thursday Murder Club books that make them so broadly appealing? The simple answer is that they are really good. The writing is pithy and fresh, so much so that I kept writing down lines from The Last Devil To Die. . . But there’s more than just quotable sentences at work here. Osman’s plots play fair with the reader, carefully placing 'red herrings' to fool the reader into picking the wrong possible murder suspect—a gambit that has improved with each successive book. The endings feel both inevitable and earned: the exact combination one wants in a good mystery. . . Osman’s greatest strength is fusing the puzzle-mastery of Christie and her Golden Age peers with emotional earnestness and wry humor.” —Esquire

Low talker

Whoever told the narrator she should whisper is wrong wrong wrong. It was so hard to hear some parts which spoiled the experience for me. The story is good (I think) but I’ll have to go back and read it.

Perfection

This series is so much more than a murder mystery anthology. As the books progress you come to learn more about each character, which makes Richard Osman’s writing so engaging and so compelling. The primary characters develop and change in such a human way that you feel emotionally attached to them. This latest book is truly remarkable. By far my favorite book series in a contemporary setting.

A real tearjerker

Loved the story. This one made me cry, though. Almost as bad as A Little Life made me cry. Such beauty and poignancy in the story here. Fiona Shaw does a terrific job. My only quibble is that it’s a little too hushed a narration for me. A little too quiet and close to the mic. But overall a superb rendering of the text.

The Best One Yet!

Been a long time fan of the Thursday Murder Club octogenarians and my God has Osman knocked it out of the park with this one. The blessed character development of our Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim continues on with The Last Devil to Die and it's like seeing four old friends again. I laughed out loud, I sighed, I teared up and I often found myself engaged with all the new wonderful characters (Garth! ♥️) The narration was impeccable as always and I'm about to savor it all over again. Yes! It was THAT good.
