About this listen

Rome has fallen into darkness.

Its legacy remains alive in Constantinople, whose leaders struggle to retain control. Yet famine, war, and an encroaching night leave the Eastern Empire towards ruin.

Faint hope arises as a new dynasty ascends the throne of Caesar. Bearing witness to such events is Varus, a young Herulian slave to the aging yet powerful Justin, who unveils a bold plan held by two generations of Romans - to retake the West and reclaim their homeland.

Following Justin’s dream, Varus enlists with the Roman Army and discovers the carnage of 6th Century warfare. As a mysterious horde of black-shielded invaders devastates the Empire’s northern provinces, Varus’ unit is called upon to defend under the leadership of Belisarius, one of Justin’s most promising commanders.

As Varus prepares for the sacrifices to come, however, he begins to question Justin’s secrets, seeking answers regarding his true identity and place as a pivotal figure in the Empire’s survival.

Great Story..

This was a great story overall but the narration had me taking breaks throughout. The overly dramatic delivery was just way too much. Will probably buy the next one.

Dedication to History

I enjoy reading and studying history, especially about the Roman and medieval eras. This novel about Varus and Belisarius is a rare find as very few authors are willing to write about this era of history, particularly about the Eastern Roman Empire.

I found that the author is talented at depicting battles as well as portraying historical characters in an appropriate way. There are some slight adjustments made from historical accuracy in order to help the story flow seamlessly. I recognize that this was done because we don't know enough about the early life of the characters from primary historical accounts to form a coherent story about each of them. However the adjustment works very well and does not take away from the historical value of the novel. I'm excited to read the sequel.

Couldn't Stop Listening

This book is an absolute must read must listen! From the gripping battle scenes and remarkable attention to detail on the life of Varus, I was hooked from the very start. The narration gives it another element as well, with a storytelling feel that sweeps you into the world you are listening to. This is a masterpiece of dark age fiction! This is definitely worth your time! You won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't!
