About this listen

London, 1782. The sole survivor of an ill-fated expedition to Jamaica has gone missing upon his return home. Dr. Thomas Silkstone had been entrusted to catalog all the New World specimens and therefore feels compelled to investigate the disappearance. Meanwhile, a rumor circulates that a potion with the power to raise the dead is afoot, and the formula is thought to be in the missing botanist's journal.

As he investigates, the good doctor is drawn into a world of trafficking in corpses for profit. When a headless corpse is discovered, Silkstone uncovers the sinister motives of those who would stop at nothing to possess the Lazarus potion.

Inspired by true-life physician Dr. William Shippen Jr., this delightful series has been hailed as "CSI meets The Age of Reason" (Karen Harper, New York Times bestselling author).

Engaging but....

The plots Ms Harris’s Dr Silkstone mysteries are engaging and edifying but his love interest never fails to disappoint me. At least there were a few women I could respect in this story but I have given up hope for any happiness for poor Thomas.

The Best Yet of the Series

Set within the scourge of slavery and the impunity of British Lords, things are never what they seem.

Simon Vance may read a phone book and I'd love it

This story is the best of the series so far. But, for me, Simon Vance's talent (on par with Kate Reading's in my humble opinion) is more than sufficient to justify almost any listen. This novel is NOT just any listen. Win Win.

Love this series!

A jump from anatomist to botanist doesn’t stop the bodies from dropping and a mystery unfolding in Thomas Silkstone’s life. Plants from Jamaica (a British seat of slave trade) may hold the power to revive the dead. Obviously more than one person would kill to obtain this Lazarus Cure/Curse. There is some excellent historical research pertaining to both the English slave trade and English Black Freedman. I like the way the author has dealt with questions of morality throughout this series. This has been especially well written.

A forced legal separation from Lydia has Thomas attempting to do the “right” thing for Lydia and her son. There is a shocking twist here.

This Narration is Superb.

Geez

I truly do not know how much more I can take if this series. It gets me I. Knots and it gets painful to listen to.

The history is thrown into the fiction and of course the references to the slavery. Told in truth but too many twists.

Lupton and Montague just need to be killed off. Just too much.

Barbaric Story of Slavery

This was hard to listen to. Descriptions of the horrors of slaves taken from Jamaica to England and treated worse than dogs. Although it is well written and performed, I wish I hadn’t listened to it. And, the ending was not a happy one. Perhaps written so to keep readers wanting another book .

Excellent story

Very rarely do I find a story that is told in such rich artistic tones that you grasp the full intent of the author without the crass details so many fall to these days. Also without all the virtue signaling if so many others. There is nothing in this book that isn't in many others to cause offense or alarm. Many action packed mystery books contain evil deeds and evil doers. So know going in that this book contains many .

One-half A Book!

The series is excellent and Simon Vance is an amazing narrator, Unfortunately, there is at least one-half a book missing. At first, I thought I was mistaken, but to listen to the rest of the story, one must download the next book in the series.
