About this listen

Miracles are happening. Pray to God they stop.

In the dead of winter, on a highway in Quebec, a man crashes his car and survives. In New York, a homeless person is run over by a bus and lives. In Tokyo, a teenager jumps off a high rise building and fails in taking her own life. All over the world, miracles like these transpire, and people breathe a sigh of relief.

But for the next week, some people will begin to suspect a terrible truth. A handful will even search for it. One man will find it.

And in seven days, all hell will break loose.

Note: Graphic violence and language.

Had no idea what to expect. But a great listen.

I listened to this book not knowing what it was about. Besides what the title implies. I did not read reviews or see what the plot was.
The first few chapters had my pretty confused as to what in the hell was going on. It seemed so random and chaotic. But like all great books, or movies, it all snaps together perfectly and everything falls into place, and I just couldnt stop listening to see where the next chapter would take me. This is one of those books where i kept checking to see how much time was left, because i really didnt want it to end.
Ever since i read the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony, I have always had a fascination as to the many different versions of Death throughout our history. I even enjoyed Meet Joe Black, and that movie is just a crawl.
Even though I have worked in the Northern part of the US this past year (North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota), I still never really heard what a true Canadian accent was. And I hope this was a true version of what that accent sounds like, because I thoroughly enjoyed each character.
Just downloaded some other Blackmoore books, and im hoping they are just as good.

It's ok

I have read and listened to a lot of Keith's books and this one seemed to not know what it was in the beginning and almost like he wasn't sure how to end it either. the middle of the story is fun, engaging and full of some interesting concepts that were never flushed out in the rest of the story.

How many "F" bombs does a story need?

Yes, I'm a snob when it comes to excessive foul language - guilty as charged. But consider: if a literary metric to determine a story's quality rests upon the amount of "F" words and similar foul expressions (...in that more is better), then this story would be one of the greatest told in the history of fiction writing (I jest). I'm a former infantryman of 25 years and my mind is reasonably calloused to foul language, but those callouses cannot excuse the destruction of an otherwise good story at the ham-handed application of excessively intrusive foul language. In fact, "The Missing Boatman" appears to have the makings of a wonderful story if it were not for the liberal applications of the basest language as if to enhance something that would otherwise suffer without it. Sad.
.
I loved Keith Blackman's "Mountain Man" series because the listener/reader is drawn into the desperation and plot of the character's experiences...with much less emphasis on testacies and F-bombs.

Keith, please continue to write, but you may want to put greater distance between you and gutter literature.

If nothing else at least it's original

Most of the negative reviews that I read for The Missing Boatman talked about how awful the narrator P.J. Ochlan was. Those people were not wrong. If I had to guess, I'd say that Ochlan was picked solely on his reading of Franks rant on the golf course which was so funny I had to listen to it a couple of times. Unfortunately the rest of his performance was rubbish. I found however, that increasing be the narration speed drastically improved it.
I found the story to be both interesting and original. For the most part, the characters were engaging and likeable. The books tempo was a bit strange. It read more like a collection of novella's rather have than one continuous storyline. For about the first third of the book it focuses on a character called the Stickman During this part it maintains the feel of a dark, brooding revenge thriller. When it switches it's focus to one of the other characters, the mood changes ( to dark comedy)so swiftly and completely I was half convinced that I was listening to an entirely different book.
In the end everything comes together quite nicely and you are left with an entertaining story that's well worth the listening.
