Publisher's summary
Read by the author.
Are you ready to live with intention and adjust your mindset to be fully equipped to handle anything life throws at you? Join Pastor Matt Chandler as he leads you through the book of Revelation chapter-by-chapter and encourages Christians to build mental fortitude knowing that God called you for such a time as this. Using historical examples, The Overcomers will put steel in the spines of believers and remind them of the fierce, conquering, commanding authority of God over all the earth.
You were made for this exact moment in human history. Things may look gloomy, and you may feel discouraged, but because of the promise and hope found in Scripture, you can be brave, confident, and victorious today!
The apostle John wrote his letter to a certain group of people in a particular place at a specific time. Although it was written to them, it was also written for us. The Overcomers takes a chapter-by-chapter view of Revelation rather than a line-by-line deep dive, helping readers practically understand what God wants to say to us today through this extraordinary book written thousands of years ago. He also talks about how we should view current events, knowing that the writers of the New Testament understood themselves to be living in the “end times” or “last days.”
Believers will be reminded that they are uniquely wired and uniquely placed in this moment in history as part of God’s big plan to push back darkness and to establish light. Christ has overcome, and in Him we, too, are the overcomers! In this book, believers will:
- Find courage and confidence from fellow believers who have gone before us.
- Feel empowered as God reminds them of His promises fulfilled and yet to come.
- Understand the strategies, tactics, and deceptions Satan uses to try to keep us paralyzed with anxiety and fear.
- Build up their mental strength by intentionally living their life for God and mindfully pursuing the light of the world
- Study the book of Revelation and how God uses it to encourage His people through dark times and hardships
In The Overcomers, Matt Chandler reminds listeners that they don’t have to be anxious or afraid of anything in the present or in the future because both have already been won. We are not victims but overcomers—and we are a key part of what God is working out in our day. God is at work in the mess, just as He has always been, and He continues to accomplish His purpose of seeking and saving the lost.

Jim Burgen was a preacher’s kid who grew up loving church, until it felt like one day, he realized he was an adult who didn’t. He’d burned out and was full of questions. An encounter with C.S. Lewis’ Voyage of the Dawn Treader introduced him to Eustace, a little boy whose greed and hurt turned him into a dragon. He couldn’t un-dragon himself, no matter how hard he tried. Only one person could: the good lion, Aslan. That day, Burgen’s life changed forever. Burgen takes us on a journey through the remarkable process of Jesus saving him from himself.

Story
The short book of Philippians is one of the most quoted in the Bible, yet Paul wrote it not for the popular sound bites, but to paint a picture of a mature Christian faith. While many give their lives to Jesus, few then go on to live a life of truly vibrant faith. In this disruptively inspiring book, Chandler offers tangible ways to develop a faith of pursuing, chasing, knowing, and loving Jesus. Because if we clean up our lives but don't get Jesus, we've lost! So let the goal be him.

The Song of Solomon offers strikingly candid - and timeless - insights on romance, dating, marriage, and sex. We need it. Because emotions rise and fall with a single glance, touch, kiss, or word. And we are inundated with songs, movies, and advice that contradicts God's design for love and intimacy. Matt Chandler helps navigate these issues for both singles and marrieds by revealing the process Solomon himself followed: attraction, courtship, marriage...even arguing. The Mingling of Souls will forever change how you view and approach love.

Story
The Son of God was crucified, died and buried, and He lay in the tomb for three days—until He walked out shining like the sun. In a culture in which history is erased or rewritten at will, the existence of an empty tomb matters. Why? Because if the tomb is empty—then anything is possible. Joby Martin dives deep into scripture and traces the story of salvation by highlighting the seven mountains throughout scripture where God manifests himself. As he describes each encounter with God, Martin shows us how the interaction on each mountain laid the groundwork for Christ's sacrifice.

Story
The Christian culture that has underpinned Western society for centuries has been eroded. We're now at the point where to disagree with people on issues such as marriage and sexuality is seen as hateful. Christians are no longer seen as honorable, but as bigots. But history testifies that the more people try to destroy Christianity, the more it grows. So we are entering an exciting period of time because we're back in the place where Christ's church can thrive - at the margins of society. In this stirring, passionate book, Matt Chandler tells us we need Christian courage like never before.

Story
Could you share the gospel with another person? Would you know where to start? Do you even know what the gospel is? It's the Good News of Jesus, and a gospeler is simply someone who shares it with others. Willie Robertson writes about his story of faith, which came about in large part because a stranger went out of his way—as well as his comfort zone—to have a spiritual conversation with Willie's father, Phil. And from that story, he tells listeners how they, too, can talk about Jesus with their family, friends, neighbors, and even people they meet along the way.

Bird call Christians everywhere to discern the nature of Christian witness in fractured political environments.

As a young pastor, Matt Chandler knew he needed to learn how to help hurting people. He studied the Scriptures, and he learned from people at the Village Church who remained joyful in their suffering. And then suddenly he was having to live what he'd learned. This is the moving story of Matt's battle with a potentially fatal brain tumor. But it's also the stories of those who taught him, and teach him, how to walk with joy in sorrow.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

The Qur'an, believed by Muslims to be the word of God, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the living source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, it has nevertheless remained difficult to understand in its English translations.

This is the moving story of Matt's battle with a potentially fatal brain tumor. But it's also the stories of those who taught him, and teach him, how to walk with joy in sorrow.

Story
Too few people attending church today, even those in evangelical churches, are exposed to the gospel explicitly. Sure, many will hear about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn't there--at least not in its specificity and its fullness. Inspired by the needs of both the overchurched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, Matt Chandler has written this punchy treatise.

Recovering Redemption. What does it mean? Recovering: Getting back, restoring. Redemption: God’s plan of salvation, the gospel. Because we have a tendency to drift from the gospel, we must be reoriented back to the gospel. We must recover a right understanding and application of the gospel. We must see that the gospel is the fuel for salvation and sanctification and the panacea to fix all things. The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.

The Reformers viewed the gospel as not merely one thing among many in the life of a church but rather the means by which the church exists. When the gospel is rightly declared and applied to God’s people, the church becomes "a creature of the Word". She understands, embraces, and lives out the reality of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection in more than her doctrinal statement. The gospel impacts all the church is and does.

Like a sit down
This book felt very much like a sit down with Matt Chandler. Several times throughout the book I found myself imagining his hands moving as he spoke, as if he was sitting across from me at a coffee shop, rather than playing in my head.
The book touched on a few topics, mainly homosexuality and political leanings that personally made my ears perk up.
This is a great listen and insightful. My family and I served at TVC for 9 years, then we moved, and I’ve been listening to Matt’s sermons online for 9 years - you can feel that reigned in energy in his reading, which helped keep it upbeat and nicely paced.

Empowering and Inspiring
Matt Chandler's “The Overcomers” is a powerful and uplifting book that equips Christians to face life's challenges with confidence and courage. Drawing deeply from the book of Revelation and historical examples, Chandler masterfully instills a sense of purpose and empowerment in readers, reminding them of God's sovereign authority and enduring promises.
From the first page, Chandler's writing is both engaging and accessible, making complex biblical concepts understandable and relevant for today's believers. This approach not only makes the book more approachable but also allows readers to see the big picture of God's redemptive plan.
One of the standout aspects of “The Overcomers” is its ability to instill "steel in the spines" of believers. Chandler doesn't shy away from addressing the fears and anxieties that many Christians face, but he skillfully counters these with scriptural promises and historical examples of courage and faith. The book serves as a potent reminder that we are not victims of our circumstances but victorious participants in God's grand narrative.
“The message of the book of Revelation is meant to bring stability in the most challenging times imaginable.”
The real strength of “The Overcomers” lies in its ability to make believers feel uniquely called and empowered for this moment in history.
In summary, “The Overcomers” by Matt Chandler is an inspiring and empowering read that every Christian should have on their bookshelf. It is a book that will encourage you, strengthen your faith, and remind you of your vital role in God's kingdom.
Highly recommended!

A helpful guide through the book of Revelations
This book unlocked a completely new perspective of the book of Revelations for me! Things that seemed overly complicated before, now make sense. Timelines and representations and symbols are all much clearer. Chandler does a fantastic job of explaining life as an Overcomer, detailing what that looks like from a prophetic prospective throughout Revelations.
