About this listen

The battle against evil has begun in this "devishly entertaining" (Publishers Weekly) story of a suburban neighborhood in the grip of surreal terror - a number-one national best seller from Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman.

Peaceful suburbia on Poplar Street in Wentworth, Ohio, takes a turn for the ugly when four vans containing armed "regulators" terrorize the street's residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to step outside their homes. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins, and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn Western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic eight-year-old boy, Seth Garin.

"A rip-roaringly violent thriller whose main action takes place in little more than an hour and a half" (Booklist), The Regulators features an introduction by Stephen King on "The Importance of Being Bachman".

Unabridged!

I am so glad that there are unabridged versions of The Regulators and Desperation. I love that Frank Muller is the narrator of this book. I just associate so many of King's books with him.

Finally!

I had this book on cassette tape narrated by the awesome Frank Mueller. The tapes finally wore out and I made the mistake of purchasing the book on Audible without checking who was narrating. I cannot remember who the narrator was but I couldn't get through the first ten minutes. I had been looking to purchase this book again even if it was on cassette as long as it was narrated by Frank Mueller. No luck. I was in heaven when I went to look for another Stephen King book and saw this.
I grew up with Stephen King and love his older work. I am not too fond of his latest stuff. I know that I am in the minority when I say that I loathed Dr. Sleep. Another book that I couldn't finish because of the narrator and story line. And, I must confess that I am not sure if I would have liked The Regulators if the narrator hadn't drawn me in. It is bizarre and not my usual cup of tea but it's Frank and that's good enough for me. So...five stars for the narration and three and maybe a half for the story itself.

It was ok.

Struggled to get threw this one at times. Several parts were completely unnecessary and boring. Do yourself a favor and fast forward threw the TV show skit chapters of the regulators and the moto cops. It has nothing to offer to the story and is boring. The story was not super interesting honestly but after listening to Desperation, which was really good, I just powered threw it to hear a few different things about Tak.

Stephen at his best

Weaving of the plot.Plot developed gradually and all answers not revealed until end. Felt empathy for main characters

I like that it elaborates on the story Desperation

I listened to it twice, it continues the story Desperation and you learn more about Tak and the mines.

King and Muller.... Nuff said....

I struggle to come up with a new way of saying how much I loved a Frank Muller performance of any book, especially a King novel. I wish I could say something I haven't before, or have some epiphany of words that would make it spring to life as much as he makes these books come alive.

Frank Muller is the greatest narrator I've ever heard, and I am heartbroken that he has left us. If I had only one wish in life I honestly believe it would be to hear the final 3 Dark Tower books narrated by Frank (no disrespect to George Guidall, he was also fantastic).

This story is a mirror novel with Desperation, and while I've heard it doesn't matter which you read first, I'm glad I chose Desperation first and then this. If only to save the better narration for last. Great story by King and an amazing performance by someone taken from us too soon. Get your hands on as many of his narrations as you can. They are worth it.

Not Desperation

I was a little aback by all the carnage. Tak was a bad dude, but I think his essential nature was better developed in the sister book of Desperation. I am a sucker for easy endings too!!! I hate when the protagonist gets assassinated!!!!
