Publisher's summary
When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise.
With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn't possibly get any worse. But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artifacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors.
The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn't come easy among these ancient trees....

Story
The red night of bells heralds global catastrophe. Annihilation on a biblical scale. Seeing the morning is no blessing. The handful of scattered survivors are confronted by blood-red skies and an infestation of predatory horrors that never originated on earth. An occupying force intent on erasing the remnants of animal life from the planet. Across the deserted landscapes of England, bereft of infrastructure and society, the overlooked can either hide or try to outrun the infernal hunting terrors. Until a rumour emerges claiming that the sea may offer an escape.

Story
Money's tight and their new home is a fixer-upper. Deep in rural South West England, with an ancient wood at the foot of the garden, Tom and his family are miles from anywhere and anyone familiar. His wife, Fiona, was never convinced that buying the money-pit at auction was a good idea. Not least because the previous owner committed suicide. Though no one can explain why.

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. Story
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

scary woods!
So the first half was just absolutely great. It was genuinely thrilling and scary. The second half kind of dragged but picked up again. I do feel like the ending leaves a bit to be desired. Kind of felt like the story deserves a stronger ending. Excited to watch the movie I hear is on Netflix. I wonder of the faster pacing of movies will make the second half of the story better. Hopefully they switch up the ending too.

Scary in all the best ways
This was a page turner and had all kinds of different horror elements. The last 1/3 dragged just a bit but the overall story and the hair raising ending more than made up for it. 5/5 man I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Whoa what a story
Enjoyed it for the most part but at times it was way out there and really hard to follow. It took me a few days to finish, and I am assuming the last man standing is rescued and don't really understand the meaning of all the weird people and why they either killed you or kept you hostage, to me that was not clear. I am not sure I would recommend this book.

Creepy and will get under your skin, lags some in the middle
I really loved this book for the most part. There are some fantastically creepy moments and the tension in the first half is top notch. It lags some beginning at the midway point and loses momentum, but picks up again at the end. I think the narrator is pretty good but I also think some of my struggle with the middle section was from the effort of deciphering the accents, and it may have worked better for me overall if I’d read the physical book instead. Will definitely be looking for more works by this author, though.

Awesome folk horror tale
This was an amazing story not only with elements of folk horror but exploring the bonds between 4 men who had once had a strong friendship when they roomed together at university and are attempting to find those bonds once again as they undertake a hiking tour in Sweden. Unfortunately almost immediately they face issues as 2 of the guys failed to properly prepare for the physical rigours of the trip leaving them with no real choice but to attempt to shortcut thru a forest. Thing is that this forest is an ancient forest, home to things that once were seen as godlike creatures that had to be appeased. These hikers have no idea how they are about to be tested and those found wanting, well let's just say they don't have to worry about it.
Note: There is a movie on Netflix that is loosely based upon this book. While it differs in many ways as obviously there's no feasible way to cover everything in a 2 hour movie but surprisingly this is one of the rare adaptations from book to movie that actually is good. I'd still recommend the book before watching the movie though.

A little slow at the end, but worth it overall
The narrator did a fine job, and was pleasant to hear. The story line is quick in the first two thirds or so, then slows down until the end but it’s pulled together at the very end. Overall, definitely enjoyable and worth a read! Very different than the movie in a few ways.

Love it!
So I watched the movie first. Loved that, and then heard this was a tad different with a satanic black metal element that was not in the movie. Thought that would be interesting, so I grabbed the audio book.
The narrator is fantastic. He dives into every character and ever emotion like a true professional. 5 stars for him.
The book is also great. The front half is just like the movie, except for the reason why they go on their trip and therefore the reason their friendships are dissolving. The Jotunn shows up in the shadows and kills then one by one, and then similar to the movie, Luke finds “refuge” in a small village. Instead of a village full of fearful servants to the Jotunn, instead we have a sole member of the cult who is in charge of caring for the ancient ones in the attic as well as finding blood sacrifices for their demigod. The twist here is that her village has been infected by a bunch of wannabe Oden worshipping black metal kids who want to destroy everything and become members of this cult they know zero about. Instead, the last mother frees Luke and has him kill 2 of the 3 metal heads and the Jotunn takes care of the 3rd.
Ok, so why the 4 stars instead of 5… it drags a bit, and the ending was short, like the movie. I really wanted to see and experience the creature in both formats more. I like the Black Metal twist, but it does take away from the entire friend adventure and then ends up dragging along as we learn about the new characters and the new situation.
It makes for a fun and unpredictable twist that reminds me a bit of the movie Dagon. Where a guy essentially gets shipwrecked and then finds himself trapped in a village of fish people that want him for a sacrifice. It’s just a fun watch to see him trying to escape and things just keep getting worse and crazy.
Regardless, I really enjoyed this book and same with the movie. This is my first Nevill book, but it won’t be my last. Just wish it had been edited down a bit.

It was just OK
I experienced the first half of the story, dragging on, and on. Once Luke had been captured and held captive by blood frenzy, things got confusing that I don’t feel wherever fully explained. Given everything that Luke went through, I found the ending quite dissatisfying.
