About this listen

A low-level drug runner named Cruz finds himself exiled from sunny Miami to frigid Chicago. He holes up in a decrepit rooming-house, the Kenilworth Arms, in the dead of winter. There he meets Jonathan, a yuppie struggling to get over a failed romance, and Jamaica, a prostitute on the payroll of the drug kingpin Bauhaus. When Cruz and Jamaica are forced to drop two kilos of cocaine down a ventilation shaft in the rooming-house to escape a police raid, strange things begin to happen....

David J. Schow's The Shaft features a unique mingling of supernatural horror with the very real dangers involved in drug-running, creating a uniquely compelling atmosphere. Amid the inexplicable terrors of a building that seems weirdly animate and of some loathsome monstrosity lurking in the bottom of the ventilation shaft, the pursuit of Cruz, Jonathan, and Jamaica by Bauhaus and his minions seems by turns insignificant and chillingly immediate.

Classic Horror

THE SHAFT by David J Schow is a classic horror story produced by Crossroads Press. I am so thankful that Crossroads Press is producing audiobooks of some of the best classic horror stories from a few decades ago, while several are rereads for me I would have never enjoyed THE SHAFT otherwise. The narration is great and the story has some very unexpected twists and turns. I was very entertained throughout.

A “haunted house” tale that has some serious teeth

The Kenilworth Arms apartment building is getting pretty run down and dilapidated.

It’s also getting pretty hungry.

Coming out of the 80’s horror boom and nastier than 5 stubby inches of beet red Bowhouse bratwurst, The Shaft delivers with a sex and drug induced, violent “haunted house” tale that has some serious teeth.

Took a bit to get firing on all cylinders, but I dug it. 3.5 Stars rounded up.

Excellent performance of a David Schow novel!

Review of “The Shaft” written by David J. Schow and Performed by Josh Brogadir

“The Shaft” was first published in 1990 from the author that brought us screenplays for the movies “The Crow” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”. This novel is a gritty read, peppered with pure “Schowism” -my fancy made up word for writing that is distinguishably recognizable as something David Schow may have wrote. For example, right off the bat we are introduced to a homeless women being described as “Marginally female, a ragbag watches in fear from the far end of the car, eyes like wet black seeds, body a huddle of scarves and threadbare castoffs”

The book interweaves the lives of the main characters: a drug dealer (Cruz), A scorned divorcee (Jonathan), a prostitute (Jamaica), and a drug kingpin, (Bauhaus) with various other supporting characters. They all come together to experience the horror within the shaft at Kenilworth Arms apartment building.

This audiobook is a cocaine filled adventure that is presented to us by the talented narrator Josh Brogadir. Josh is flawless in presenting this story to us. He highlights every tense moment and doesn’t back off describing the gritty scenes. He has a very pleasant voice for audio work and delivers clear and concise pronunciation. His pacing is stellar and is a perfect choice for this style of a book. His accents for different characters are great and the overall editing of the audio was done well. Overall, this is a terrific performance of David Schow’s “The Shaft” and recommended for those who enjoy the splatterpunk genre… I was given this audiobook for my voluntary honest review which is provided here.
