Publisher's summary

Dina has unwillingly inherited her mother's gift: the ability to elicit shamed confessions simply by looking into someone's eyes. To Dina, however, these powers are not a gift but a curse. Surrounded by fear and hostility, she longs for simple friendship.

The story is nicely original and has well developed characters and plot. The narration is good too. What a wonderful deal for this series to part of the us category

A dark ride, well worth your time!

I read this book from the library many times as a child, and I have all four on my bookshelf now at 27. I was so excited to find them here! Dina and her strength helped me cope with the loss of both my grandfathers when I was in third grade, being bullied and struggling in classes. It's hard to see the beauty in the world when you're suffering, but I feel like this writing really helps a child realize what they love about their home, or if their environment is bad. As an adult, the darker themes make it a compelling story that had me at the edge of my seat! On to book two!

Good start and setup

Nice voice, good story, has the start of an epic fantasy journey series. excited to start book 2. characters are good, it's always hard for me to love young characters like this one aged 12 ish because their brains and knowledge base makes them annoying almost but I also find real life 12 year olds annoying so it makes it sense and it's good that the character acts age appropriate. some violence and graphic parts but not overwhelmingly violent.

audio not my favorite

The audio was very hard to manage. when the narrator was whispered speaking I had to turn it up and then within seconds she would go to a normal tone and it would be painfully loud.

This was such an exciting story

this story does not have a dull moment. The Shamers daughter goes from one adventure to another. I loved The part where she develops her mind reading and learns her limitations.

It's beautifully written
