Publisher's summary

A gripping ground-level narrative…a marvel of reporting: tightly wound… but also panoramic.” (Washington Post)

“A lean, fast-paced and important account of the chaotic final weeks.” (New York Times)

In The Steal, veteran journalists Mark Bowden and Matthew Teague offer a week-by week, state-by-state account of the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election. In the 64 days between November 3 and January 6, President Donald Trump and his allies fought to reverse the outcome of the vote. Focusing on six states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—Trump’s supporters claimed widespread voter fraud.

The Steal is an engaging, in-depth report on what happened during those crucial nine weeks and a portrait of the dedicated individuals who did their duty and stood firm against the unprecedented, sustained attack on our election system and ensured that every legal vote was counted and that the will of the people prevailed.

In this revised version of the The Steal, Mark Bowden distills the full January 6th Committee Report from its original 300,000 words to a brisk and illuminating few pages. Teague and Bowden have also added a preface, an afterword, and updates throughout the text to include new findings from the January 6th Committee Report and Trump's ongoing attempts at regaining popularity and running for office in 2024.

Scary

A scary glimpse into the cult leader power trump has over his followers. A dangerous glimpse at his willingness to keep power at any cost.

Unbelievable and well told

I’m so glad I bought this book, I love learning about the patriots that stood up for our Constitution and our Democracy. I’m also sorry for the folks that were lured by power, money and position to try to overturn our democracy and won’t believe their own eyes about the insurrection.
I’ve been harboring such I’ll will toward Republicans since 2020. This book has made me realize that we are all Americans and that we do have a voice and that regardless of our vote, the majority of us will stand up for our Democracy and Rights. Thank you Mark Bowden and Matthew Teague for telling this much needed story.

Informative

The details and first hand accounts in the book were great for supporting the book’s conclusion. I do think the language in the book sounded biased at times. This could have been a factor of the narrator as much as the authors. It doesn’t change my alignment with the conclusion, but feel like others could use it to justify their doubts.

Must Listen

This book goes into detail the MAGA try to steal. MAGA turned on themselves did whatever was possible to keep President Trump in office. MAGA is something every American should beware of and treated as a terrorist organization. I myself is a proud Desert Storm Republican that never be inline with these terrorists.

Well written, but too narrowly focused

The authors do a great job of including personalities and anecdotes in this book, which makes it easy to read. But it seems repetitive because it covers a series of similar attempts to discredit the election results in different states. Sure, the people are different, and sometimes the allegations are, too (e.g., Sharpiegate, ballot stuffing, mail-in fraud, dead voters, etc.) but the overall issues are the same: Trump prepped his supporters to believe that any outcome that did not elect him was fraudulent, and die-hard supporters took that to heart despite no evidence. Any yahoo's allegation of fraud on the internet might go viral and be seized on by others as "proof." There is almost nothing in this book about January 6, which disappointed me. I am a huge Mark Bowden fan and feel the authors did a great job with the focus they had, but after 2/3 of the book, I was ready for it to end.

Good Overview

This book is a great survey of the 2020 election challenges and the personalities behind them. It mostly focuses on the election officials and the pro-Trump team seeking to challenge them. A lot of the story exposes the schism in the Republican Party.

It is easier reading than I'd like, great for public consumption but a bit light on details, especially on the legal arguments in the trials (which I am excessively interested in). But the details about people's backstories and their lives in the aftermath of the election are exceptionally rich, giving you a real feel for who they were.

An admirable production!

Every Patriotic American Should Read This Book

Seems like this was a trial run to identify the weak spots in the process in order to overthrow the will of the people in the future. While it didn't work out in 2020, they now know what they need to do to prevail when they don't agree with an election outcome. The courts held this time...

informative and honest.

The way the I formation was presented, state by state, made a complicated event easy to understand. The clear and concise facts underscored the accuracy of the conclusions. The narration was excellent.

Fascinating local insights

Fascinating local insights, including where I live - Delco PA. SO many wrong conclusions in the minds of those who believed the Big Lie. Americans need to come together to stop this!
