About this listen

The latest installment in the irresistibly warm and welcoming 44 Scotland Street series

Approached in the park by a shadowy figure, Angus Lordie is mistaken for a journalist and becomes privy to some controversial plans of the Scottish Parliament—but just what is he meant to do about it? At school, a new member of Bertie’s class, Galactica MacFee, quickly comes between Bertie and Olive, leaving him no choice but to skip town. And the indomitable Irene finds herself yet again in Edinburgh … but this time there might be romance in the air.

Meanwhile, Matthew invests in a brand-new Pictish Experience Centre, meant to allow residents to experience what life was like for Scotland’s mysterious early people, the Picts. And they have made a fantastic discovery—the earliest known work of Scottish literature! But what exactly do those mysterious Pictish runes say? What’s no secret, however, is that in the microcosm of 44 Scotland Street, love, generosity, and goodwill abound.

Another sweet installment of 44 Scotland Street

School turf wars, deep throat, Irene being washed out to sea, a Pictish relic, weight watching, these are some of the stories featured in this installment. As always, the book is fun and with many funny turns, and Alexander McCall Smith uses his characters to give way to his musings over various issues and questions.

Bertie’s Neighborhood

As always I would like more. However it was a great update on all the folks at 44 Scotland St.

Always a good listen.

AM Smith tells beautifully interwoven stories with profound messages without being didactic. This is another such story from 44 Scotland Street.

Another great Scotland street book

Like Ted Lasso, Bertie and the other characters are always kind. A nice respite from our world on most days.

Characters are beautifully and individually developed in the various but cleverly interconnected stories.

Lively, well-developed characters. McCall Smith intrigues and worries us, but always shows us in the end that human beings are good.
Robert Ian Mackenzie is a brilliant and engaging narrator. He is true to each of the many characters and makes it a joy to get to know them.

Always a pleasurable escape

As usual nothing much happens but it's a lovely little slice of make believe. Quite enjoyable! Wonderful narration.

Love all of his books.

The reader was not right for this book. His voice was too slow and heavy.

the author's emphasis on the contagion of kindness is the Hallmark of AMS works.

Irene is back but not for long (I hope). How can a mother and son be such opposites?
