About this listen

In this “absolutely brilliant, tension-filled tour de force” (Brad Thor) from New York Times bestselling author Terry Hayes, CIA spy Kane confronts an evil that could bring the world to a cataclysmic end.

If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again—by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide—and when to shoot.

But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet are such a place—a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West—but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart.

NOT another I am Pilgrim

This book was not at all similar to his prior book. I specifically bought this book because I think “I am Pilgrim” is one of the best spy books ever written. This is more of a Robert Ludlum mixed with Andy Weir. It’s well written and enjoyable. A little over the top and definitely sci-fi. Had this been his first book, I would not have bought a second though.

Sjo

The story was great until it went sci-fi. Liked the characters, historical perspectives, and science and engineering feats.

Disappointed in the narrator - really liked I Am Pilgrim's narrator and he would have done a far better job with different characters.

An unrealistic turn of events

The story begins well enough. It was not near as enthralling as I Am Pilgrim. Without giving any spoilers the story has an odd twist toward the end. Not what I was expecting at all. I can’t say not to listen to this book. The narrator does a wonderful job! If he had not performed so well I probably would’ve stopped listening before the halfway point.

Worth a read

This is not a sequel to I am Pilgrim. The story is good, there is a twist in the last 1/3 of the book I didn’t love, but was setup and done fine. Terry Hayes does a good job of telling a story, but he didn’t intertwine all the threads as well as he did in I am Pilgrim. It’s definitely worth a read.

Great start of spy novel turns into weird Sci-Fi story 2/3 down the line

Hayes builds up a nice, complex and realistic spy story - 15 h of nice tension to listen to. Then: some fully unrealistic Sci-Fi turn - won’t tell more, but if you’re not into that (and I am not), then this is a turn-off. If you don’t mind , then Hayes’ latest is cool.

Surprising but not in a best way…

I liked The Pilgrim a lot. I was hoping for a kind of a continuation. The first half of the book met my expectations in a way but the other half went astray in SF… It was too lengthy and ’too much’ story-wise to me.

Not really a sequel to Pilgrim

I’m super disappointed with this audio book. I thought it would be an actual sequel to The Pilgrim and would continue the story of Scott Murdock. Unfortunately this book is about a different CIA spy, who seems to lack depth and any storytelling skills. I also miss the narrator from the previous novel. This narrator is good, but for some reason he seems to force some kind of accent by leaving off the “ing” of words like— thinkin, movin and walkin. I’ve listened to 14 chapters now, and I’m hardly invested in the characters or storyline. I’ll probably return it. 🤨

Suspend Disbelief and Enjoy

The Year of the Locust takes the reader on a thrilling journey, with elements of spy stories, sci-fi, and horror. Despite some plot holes and moments of implausibility, it's a gripping and ultimately patriotic tale.
