About this listen
Tom Petty and Me is a new book by Jon Scott, Tom's friend for 40 years. Jon has been credited with "breaking" the career of this iconic rock-and-roller. This book is an inside look of a former deejay turned promotion man, who met Tom when he was about to be dropped by his record label, ABC Records.
Through many serendipitous moments, Jon appeared at the right time to help get Tom's first album played on the radio, and that changed the careers of both men. Tom's first album had been out for eight months when Jon arrived on the scene. The rest is history! At Tom's final concert at The Hollywood Bowl, Tom dedicated "I Won't Back Down" to Jon, as a testament to Jon's help in establishing his career back in 1977.

No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Just as Nicks (and Lindsay Buckingham) gave Fleetwood Mac the "shot of adrenaline" they needed to become real rock stars - according to Christine McVie - Gold Dust Woman is vibrant with stories and with a life lived large and hard.

Story
An insider biography of the Black Crowes by drummer and cofounder Steve Gorman. In his first-person history of the Black Crowes, Hard To Handle - the first ever account of this great American rock band's beginning, middle, and end - Gorman makes it clear just how impossible that job was. Fortunately, Gorman tells the tale with great insight, candor, and humor. They don't make bands like the Black Crowes anymore: crazy, brilliant, self-destructive, inspiring, and, ultimately, not built to last. But, man, what a ride it was while it lasted.

With over 70 million records sold, Black Sabbath, dubbed by Rolling Stone “the Beatles of heavy metal,” helped create the genre itself, with their distinctive heavy riffs, tuned down guitars, and apocalyptic lyrics. Bassist and primary lyricist Geezer Butler played a gigantic part in the band’s renown, from suggesting the band name to using his fascination with horror, religion, and the occult to compose the lyrics and build the foundation of heavy metal as we know it. In Into the Void, Butler tells his side of the story.

Full of good stories
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Not knowing anything about Jon Scott I was a little skeptical wondering if this was going to be a book by some guy who just kind of knew Tom and was making money off their relationship BUT curiosity got best of me so I listened. Luckily it’s a book that is written from the heart and it honors his friend Tom. I believe it is self published and probably self produced recording and maybe has a few flaws but it actually adds to the experience in giving this book that heart. There are some great audio additions to this book.

I loved this book!
The first time I heard Jon Scott’s voice, I was in high school, and he was the best album rock (freeform) DJ I had ever heard. That statement is still true. Jon didn’t announce as much as he just talked to you. It was like he was sitting right in front of you telling you about who was on the album he was playing the song from. Jon had a passion for the music he played, and that came through over the airwaves of WMC FM100 in Memphis, the third FM station in the country to go rock on FM. I went to work at FM100 a couple of years later. I gained even more respect for Jon’s talent for picking songs and artists that were worth listening to.
I knew some of the stories that Jon shares in this book, and I really wanted this book to be good. I didn’t need to worry about that, Jon excels at everything he attempts. Tom Petty and Me is no different. Jon tells his story of promoting Tom Petty and his records. The great thing about this Audible book is you hear Jon telling his story himself. You can hear the passion for Petty and his music as Jon tells you about his friendship with Tom Petty, his band, and his family.
This book takes you on a great journey, the ups and downs of a special friendship that will keep you grinning. As a bonus, you also learn how record promotion works, or at least what it was like back in the day. You meet a lot of other characters along the way, too. Tom Petty and Me is a great ride. Jon wrote a real page-turner that is short enough to read in a few hours. I couldn’t stop listening. The Audible book also has a few audio files that add so much to Jon’s story.
As I said Jon was the best album rock jock I ever heard. His passion for music and the people who make it made him one of the best promo men to ever pitch a record. Now, you can add author to the list of things that Jon excels at.
I rate Tom Petty and Me five out of five stars. If you love Tom Petty, this is a must-read (or listen).

INCREDIBLE BOOK TOM PETTY AND ME
I read this book when it first came out and loved the intimacy of it. I've read it numerous times.
However listening to Jon Scott read this book on Audible is a whole different experience!
In listening to Jon it's like you are right there with him, I truly experienced laughter, goosebumps and yes even tears. Being able to hear clips Jon has included in the audio book touches your soul and heart strings. The listener will feel the closeness of love and friendship that spanned 40 years from a person closer to Tom Petty than most could ever dream possible. A BIG thank you to Jon Scott for doing the audio book a whole different experience than reading it as I said.
To anyone who hasn't heard it do yourself a favor buy it and listen to Jon speak directly to you in an intimate telling of this amazing book

Worth Listening, But…
I’m a huge Tom Petty fan from the very beginning, and as a musician (drummer), I’ve enjoyed seeing Tom Petty live, and playing his music in many cover bands as well. Jon Scott has a great story to tell, and for an inexperienced writer, I think he did it rather well. It did take me a while to get into the story, and I have to admit, I almost stopped listening about a third of the way through, but I’m glad I finished because it got better and better. It’s a heartfelt story from a guy who spent a lot of time with Tom Petty, and knew him well. Thank you, Jon Scott for sharing your experience with us.

I liked the truth and simplicity of this story, and the tenacity of the author. It uncovered little known aspects of the success for Tom Petty.
