About this listen

A voice from beyond the grave?

College students Kenji and Dylan stumble upon a strange recording in the background of an obscure song. It's a woman's voice uttering a string of seemingly random characters. Upon further inspection, the song appears to have been embedded with a hidden message. Attempting to crack the mysterious code and becoming obsessed with the recording, Kenji and Dylan set off in search of answers. With every turn in the road however, the puzzle only seems to grow more complicated. And sinister.

Retired Vietnam vet Reggie Cash is also drawn in by this message, and before long both he and the two college students are on the trail of the mysterious woman featured in the recording. But who is she, and where is she leading them?

As things fall into place and strange events unfold, the three of them begin to wish that they'd never heard the recording at all.

Transmission is a full-length novel of supernatural horror and suspense by Ambrose Ibsen.

Creepy and intriguing -- sure to keep you hooked!

I love that this story wastes no time and gets right down to business. Kenji hears a weird voice in the background of his music and immediately begins puzzling over it. Dragging his friend Dylan into it, they set off on a quest to discover the meaning. Elsewhere, a man sees a woman on a VHS uttering the same phrases into the camera and is sucked into the hunt as well.

The story follows our three protagonists as they endeavor to discover how and why this woman, Agnes, imprinted her message on various media 10 years ago. It's a fun and creepy romp that kept my attention just about the whole way.

Toward the 65-70% mark however, the author apparently realizes the cat is just about to be out the bag and seems intent on dragging things out as much as possible. The listener is forced to suffer through repetitive dialog and inner-monologues over how they shouldn't be doing what they're doing and how they'll regret it. Every step of the adventure is then plagued with enough hand-wringing to completely destroy the momentum.

The ending is satisfactory, although I think things might have been creepier had the woman's true nature not been what it was. There also seemed to be no real reason for some characters or facts to have existed at all.

The narrator has an appropriately creepy voice that's well-suited to a tale of this nature. The accent, while soothing, could become a bit distracting however. I'd say the biggest drawback for me was that most of the dialog was read in a monotone. Coupling that with the accent, it sometimes made it hard to tell if you were listening to someone speak or think.

Definitely worth a listen for the first 70% of the book alone though!

Great story, great narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This a good, eerie, quick paced horror story. Although short, it didn't feel like it was rushed. The characters are easily understood without going into every little detail about them.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The pace of the book was almost perfect for me. There were slight lulls but then intense, eerie sections. I have listened to a ton of horror stories and in my opinion, this one was well done.

Which character – as performed by Jake Urry – was your favorite?

No real favorites, but Jack Urry did a great job. This is my first time listening to him and was impressed. However, if you don't like narrators with accents, you should listen to the sample first.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I hope there is a sequel in the works.

Any additional comments?

After reading all of glowing reviews, then noticing on the bottom of each that they had received the book for a an honest review, I was a bit leary going into this book. But after finishing it seemed appropriate to review the book as someone who bought it.

I was enjoyable

I will not give this one away but it made me scramble to look up some interesting topics, and that sent goosebumps up my arms. It is worth a listen and it will not be my last Ambrose Ibsen book.

Curiosity Killed the Cat

Would you try another book from Ambrose Ibsen and/or Jake Urry?

This is the second book I've had by Ambrose Ibsen, I read his House by The Sea a couple weeks previous to this one and really liked his writing style. Ambrose Ibsen writes creepy, something unworldly is out to get you kind of stories,

Would you recommend Transmission to your friends? Why or why not?

Transmission wasn't as good as House by the Sea but if you are an Ambrose Ibsen fan, put this on your list. Parts of the story I found rather unbelievable and the main characters kind of get what they deserve for being so freaking nosey.

Any additional comments?

Not Ibsen's best work but it was creepy enough and there were a couple of scenes in the second half of the book that kept me up at night.

Transmission: A Supernatural Thriller

Transmission:
Ambrose Ibsen

Two University of Wisconsin students find something strange and follow it to a creepy adventure. There is suspense and mystery and paranormal or maybe supernatural aspects to this book. The ending set up for a sequel or the listeners imagination.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Jake Urry added a good bit of creep factor.

On the cusp of greatness; falls a little short but still great.

I love listening to paranormal and/or supernatural books and this one certainly fit the bill. The book teetered between having me on the figurative edge of my seat and losing traction amongst the story. I was moreso enthralled than anything else, however.

The book has some unique aspects to it that I'm not going to go in detail about because I dont want to give anything away but I will say it was a fun and interesting ride that kept me guessing until the author wanted me to know the piece de la resistance'.

If you have a love of mysteries with a bit of a thriller built in, I highly recommend this and think it nicely transcends a couple genre boundaries.

I do like the narrator but he didn't seem like the best fit for this and I cannot point to one specific instance as to why (other than the pronounciation of "Minnesota".

Really like and borderline love the book.

Transmission delivers.

Transmission is well written and atmospheric reminding the reader of Lovecraft. Ibsen does a fantastic job telling the story without unnecessary verbiage. The narrator helps enhance the eerie tone.

Way to leave the listener hanging!!

OK, let's go...the next book in the series please! The listener is totally left hanging with anticipation!

The story line is fresh and not one that has been done a thousand times over which keeps the listener engaged. It does take a bit to grasp the switch up between the boys and Reggie. I even went back and listened again to ensure that I didn't miss something with the introduction of Reggie as e new character in the story. Once I understood the connection, everything fell into place.

I hope you are close to the release of the second book in the series Ambrose Ibsen because I an very much looking forward to the continuation of the story to find out what comes next!

Jake Urry, you have done it again! After listening to so many of your narrations, I would expect nothing less than perfection from your performance. Your ability to juggle multiple characters is fantastic and credible while still managing the highest degree of malevolence in your voice required in horror stories to make the listener shudder.

I will be waiting for the next release!!
