About this listen

When 14-year-old Will Burrows goes looking for his missing father, he discovers an underground world that time forgot. Ruled by a brutal class called the Styx, "The Colony" has not changed in a hundred years. Into this dark and mysterious place go Will and his friend Chester, unsure what they will find and oblivious to the dangers ahead. Before long their extraordinary adventure unearths a terrible secret - one that may cost them their lives.

Hailed as the next big thing in fantasy literature, Tunnels grips the imagination while making listeners think twice about the ground beneath their feet.

Slow start

This book starts very slow - about 4 hours in, I felt like nothing had happened. That first quarter of the book is filled with unnecessary character development for characters we don’t even see much of throughout the rest of the book. The rest of the book is pretty good, but nothing spectacular.

I DIG IT !!!!

"Tunnels" is a GREAT adventure! First of all, you should know this is NOT a "charming children's story". There is no "happily ever after" or "riding off into the sunset". This is a gritty adventure within a new world, not in outer space, but right below our feet! The first part of the book establishes the characters, which helps the reader/listener absorb the perspective of "innocent youth" and their daily endeavors. Once Will and Chester set out, they encounter events of incredible magnitude. They are thrust into situations that teenagers are not typically expected to endure. (Not even well rounded adults could prepare for what happens to the boys.) The writers did a great job of establishing how life without sunlight could be possible, their descriptions of the cities and surrounding areas, and some of the naturally occurring events are really creative. I'd love to elaborate more on the story, but I don't want to give away any part of the plot. The one personal note I'll share is; I like the cat. I can't say anything negative about this story, and I am looking forward to the next book, "Deeper", which is due to be released March 2009.

Absolutely Wonderful!

This is a great book! Plot and characters have real depth. There are many twists, turns, and is full of suspense. I enjoyed every minute of listening. The narrator reads the book well. I am reading/listening to every book of this series. Its a must read for anybody who loves young adult literature.

On the Fence

As I listened to this book, I had mixed feelings. Even now, I am not sure how I feel about this book. Overall, the main plot concept is refreshing original. So, it's not a total waste of time. However, I feel a lot of the book focused on a lot of strange, mean and down-right weird people verses a few quality characters. After a while, I even didn't care about the so-called "heros"of the book because they were not that lovable or developed fully. The character development was unbalanced, and the plot had too many needless subplots that were not resolved well or at all. Overall, I felt the book left the reader hanging in the end (in an unsatisfying way). My ranking is more a 2.5 than the 3.
