About this listen

A twisty lesbian romance sequel to The Red Files about the family we can’t choose, and the one that chooses us.

What do a stolen food-delivery robot, a woman from the past, and a bizarre scheme to microchip military veterans have in common?

The infamous Caustic Queen, Washington DC bureau chief Catherine Ayers, would love to find out but she has a lot on her plate right now. She and her fiancée, reporter and Iowa girl Lauren King, are busy wedding planning in Lauren’s home town.

That means facing a lot of beefy mechanic brothers, a haughty cat, and a sharp-tongued Meemaw. Catherine’s sure she can play nice with everyone. Well, pretty sure. How hard can it be, anyway?

Got under my skin

I loved both the main characters in this book.Having met the unlikely pair in Red Files I was surprised at the deepening of there love for each other and the growing together as family. Winter draws the secondary characters into this story with the skill we have learned to expect. The narrator fleshed out each and every character with change in timber and tone of her voice. A truly exquisite read I would recommend to anyone even if they had not read any of Winters work before.

Wonderful Read

Another fabulously witty, funny, and intriguing story by Lee Winter, I loved getting back into the lives of King and Ayers and taking on another adventure and wedding. Victoria Mei did a wonderful job bringing Catherine, Lauren, and all the crazy Kings and other characters alive.

Another winner!

This storyline deserves to live on! I can only hope my favorite author is steadily typing out another great adventure for Ayers and King!

Excellent follow-up to The Red Files!

In this sequel to The Red Files, "Caustic Queen" Catherine Ayers and her new fiancee reporter Lauren King are planning their upcoming nuptials in Lauren's home state of Iowa, but a story with significant implications lands in their orbit. So as we get to enjoy Catherine's first foray to the great farm country of Iowa and meeting Lauren's family, the two split some of their wedding planning time with getting to the bottom of the story. I loved revisiting this book in audio format. It's apparent author Lee Winter had a lot of fun with this one. Ayers has some hysterical one-liners that induce numerous laugh out loud moments. While The Red Files focused more on the journalists tracking down the big story, in the sequel the focus is more on the couple themselves. The news story does play a significant role, however. Perhaps even more than Catherine initially anticipated. The most appealing part of this book in addition to the humor, is that Winter peels back Ayers' layers and we get to know more about where she came from and the details of the experiences that shaped her. And as that happens, she becomes an even more endearing character. As caustic as she can be, the restraint that she shows with Lauren's family - and the love she shows for Lauren in general - are breathtaking. Truly excellent character work by the author. And if you appreciate smokin' hot consummation of all that love - it's there in spades.
This is also the best work I've heard from narrator Victoria Mei. Others must agree because it just won the Independent Audiobook Award for 2020 in the LGBTQ+ category! Kudos to Winter and Mei for that - the accolade is well deserved! Highly recommend this one.

Revisiting the Caustic Queen is Worth Every Minute!

Lee Winter writes the best books. She never fails to deliver, especially on ice queens and Victoria Mei bring Catherine to life.

it's ok

the narrator takes a while to get used to again (all voices are annoyingly breathy... sample before you buy)... the story starts to good around hour 3

What's not to love?

Ice queens, robots, microchips, oh my! Great stand alone or follow up. I thought it flowed well, and I'm pretty picky. I actually finish only 2/3rds of the Audible books I buy. Winter is a great storyteller. I love the humor, the characters and the bit of "who done it". It's a nicely rounded story that delivered all that Winter has to offer...which is a lot in this genre.
