About this listen

Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she's older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable.

Loved this story

This book was wonderful. I loved the narrator's voice and southern accent. Otis a moving story of a loving family torn apart by forces of nature. The characters came alive and their emotions felt real. Thank you for this reminder.

Excellent! Bravo!

I've been moved to all emotions in this book. I've been drawn in and this book would not let go until it was over, every word giving new emotion and new anticipation for a happy ending. Wow! I've read a lot of books in the last year and few are so good I don't want to do anything else until the book ends.

Exceptional writing and the most perfect performance!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

I loved it.

I loved the narrating, with the different voices for different characters. It was wonderful, though I must say This book is pretty sad and I live in Louisiana. So this book hit hard, I still LOVED IT.

This Book is so AMAZING, You'll want to throw it!

I read the hard copy of this book 3 years ago, and I am still not emotionally over it, that's how amazing it is! One of my 5th graders, whose family was affected by Hurricane Katrina, read it as soon as it hit my library. When she was done, she insisted that I read it. But she warned me that I was going to get to a part that would make me want to throw the book.

Now, this student is as big of a bibliophile as I am, and would never injure a book. I thought she was being over dramatic. NOPE! Seriously, it is so well written, and you become so connected to the characters that you will want to throw the book. Every other student who has read it agrees; some admit that they actually did throw the book.

Because of this connection the reader has to the characters, I was very skeptical of the audio book. I couldn't fathom anyone being able to read this book and do it justice.

I was wrong. Robin Miles becomes the main character for you. Her voice, accent, attitude, and intonation brings this story to life even more. One of the best Narrator choices ever! She made me want to go find the copy of the book and throw it even harder.

Was a heart warming book

It talked about sorrow that a young shouldn't go through but God was with her and she new that she was safe with mamaw and her dad beside her. This was the best book I've ever read.

Three Cheers for Armani!

All Armani wants is to have a stellar eleventh birthday party--to the point where she's willing to fudge about how seriously neighbors are taking Hurricane Katrina. Therefore, to her, everything that follows is her fault, in her mind, because that's the way the young think, isn't it? It's a completely absorbing listen, and that she winds up shouldering so much is heartbreaking on the one hand, heart stirring on the other.
Wonderful, well fleshed-out characters with quirks, needs, weaknesses, fears, beautifully narrated in the voice of the scared young girl, this is a truly unforgettable book. It's full of love and family, and strength to spare.

Pretty Good

If the author had edited this more thoroughly, this book could have been five stars instead of 4-. As one reviewer noted, there are a lot of slow spots with unnecessary details. It's no literary masterpiece, but the story was interesting when she wrote about the storm and rescue. With some honing of her skills and a tighter approach to her storyline, she could be an upcoming author.
