About this listen

Deep within Syndicate World space, the Alliance fleet continues its dangerous journey home under the command of Captain John “Black Jack” Geary—revived after a century spent in suspended animation. Geary’s victories over the enemy have earned him both the respect—and the envy—of his fellow officers…

“Black Jack” Geary has made many risky decisions as commander, but ordering the Alliance fleet back to the Lakota Star System where it had nearly been destroyed by the Syndics has his officers questioning his sanity. It’s a desperate gamble that may buy Geary just enough time to prepare for the Syndics’ inevitable return—and give the fleet a fighting chance of survival.

But even as he struggles to stay one step ahead of the enemy, Geary must face conspirators within his own fleet—an unknown number of officers who want a change of command. And Geary knows that his fleet must stand together or the Syndic forces will tear them apart…

Fun military Sci Fi!

Follows the formula as the previous books in the series. But the formula works and is an enjoyable listen and read

The plot thickens….

Very nice blending of character development, relationship development and a thickening and twisting of the plot.

A great new twist

The internal and external conflicts make for a great story. He does a good job of introducing new ideas instead of just rehashing the same ones. I would prefer that the minimal language and erotic content wasn't there.

Still strong

This series continues to be engaging and fast paced. Looking forward to where it goes from here.

Victory lead to defeat-victory

I've enjoyed the series and it keeps interesting. However, the barbs at the Marines being brainless at the beginning of the book gets irritating as I’m a retired Marine. Then in the second half he tries to make up for it by sending barbs to the Navy enlisted, but completely leaves the officer rank alone. Sorry, when I was in the Marines, everyone was fair game. I hope in the end he sends barbs and jabs to the Fleet commissioned officers.

It also gets annoying where he explains the ‘conference room software’ two or three times in the book. I like other authors that do not put a back-story or go back at all assuming if you’re reading book 4 of 6 then you already know the back-story. I want to skip ahead whenever any of these repeats of information are done. Except that audible removed this feature from the Kindle Fire HD.

The book picks right up where the previous book left off. Captain Geary leads the fleet to a victory that turns into a defeat as billions are killed. This puts him in a mindset that will play out throughout the rest of the book and into the next one as the sub story-line hasn't resolved itself. We do see where the return to the ‘old ways’ is paying off for the fleet. However will then be enough? Will the ‘new’ internal enemy get Geary before he can get them home?

The new internal enemy reminds me of the job we have in IT of needing to balance shutting down the illegal ‘sub’ traffic on all networks and the need to keep it around to monitor it for legal reasons. It’s always a balancing act of not killing it and taking down those responsible and all involved at one time. That is what Geary faces. Can he do it? If it was up to his g/f then the network would be shut down. Buy will Geary do it or do what we do in IT?

monotonous story lines

the main personality story lines that keep repeating between battles are killing me. the author keeps writing the same arguments between Black Jack and co president. it's so boring, and wild to be repeating it literally after every battle. overall, the struggle to get back home and the alien intent continues. basically the same as the previous books advancing at a glacier pace

Excellent book in an excellent series!

The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the characters of this book to life. The plot is original and fast-paced, it makes an excellent audiobook!

Another outstanding chapter!

The fact that many overlook is that this a mature military sci fi novel. I am personally glad that the author keeps the this raw military perspective in his storytelling otherwise instead of standing out on it’s own. These stories would be lost in overwhelming amounts of senseless sci fi drama that we normally see.

Amazing Space Battles

Each battle is different and keeps me wanting to listen all day. There are also good characters, and the author has the courage to sometimes make them casualties. The main character’s thoughts are captivating.

The romance is the worst part

I barely managed to finish this book and found myself fast-forwarding entire scenes because of how cringe the romance is in this book. The core storyline is solid and the space battles are interesting but the ham-fisted relationship drama may prevent me from buying the next in the series.
