About this listen

New mother Lady Georgiana "Georgie" Rannoch finds herself trying to separate fact from fiction when a murder occurs while a film is being made on the grounds of her estate in a new Royal Spyness Mystery from beloved best-selling author Rhys Bowen.

It's late 1936, and King Edward is in turmoil, having fallen in love with the scandalously divorced and even more scandalously American Wallis Simpson. He wants to marry her but knows that doing so will jeopardize his crown. Edward confides in his dear friend Darcy, Georgie's husband, and the couple agree to hide Wallis in their home while Edward figures out what to do.

But unbeknownst to Georgie and Darcy, Sir Hubert, the owner of the estate, has given a film crew permission to shoot a motion picture about Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn on the grounds. Trying to keep Mrs. Simpson hidden while raising a newborn baby seems like it couldn't be any more stressful for the Rannochs, until one of the stars of the film is found murdered on set. Georgie must solve the murder for king and country before scandal threatens to envelop them all.

An entire Royal Spyness book without Belinda?

Another great book from Rys Bowen! I have read or listened to every single one at least once. But Belinda is one of my most favorite characters. In fact, I think a spin-off series of books focusing on Belinda as the main character would be fantastic. I find her intriguing and fun and she always brings the right amount of high class irreverence and levity. She was missed in this book. It was kind of surprising that Georgie didn't even mention her. Anyway, excellent story and Jasmine Blackborow is superb. I anticipate the next book will be during WW2. Can't wait!

Fun

“Golly”, it’s going to be a long year waiting for book 19! I started this series in paperback years ago and love the audiobook option!

Georgie Again

I very much enjoyed this book, as I have been reading and/or listening to the series from the very beginning. I would not recommend this book as an introduction to the world of The Royal Spyness series, as the mystery element is actually pretty weak. But to someone who loves Georgie and most of her friends and family we get something that I could really enjoy. Time spent with them, including the new baby and puppies with relatively little angst/danger.

In this book the historical fact that was driving the plot was the Abdication of "David" so he could marry "the woman he loved".

I do hope that the next book in the series has Belinda make an appearance, I did miss her in this one. And another appearance by Darcy's father would be nice also.

Another satisfying Georgie adventure

I liked this book more than the last few in the series. The supporting characters like Claire, Sir Hubert, and her grandfather round things out and I find myself pulling for Claire and Hubert. Will be interesting to see where things go with WWII on the horizon.

Couldn't Love More!

How rare is it to be on Book #18 and absolutely love it?! I have to admit I was nervous how Georgie would fare being "tied down" to a house and family in the country; however, Bowen knocked it out of the park! Fresh blood and storylines introduced on a grand scale, while still letting us feast on the ole tried and true characters we love. Thank you - and - Keep 'em coming!

Fun, heartfelt, cozy mystery

Rhys Bowen once again (I’ve read all the Lady Georgiana and Molly Murphy books and one non-series book) brings LG’s world to life with page turning interest! One request Ms Bowen, please consider that not all Americans fit into LG’s view of them. I recognize that this is where our heroine is in her life’s journey (as Molly Murphy has differing views, so I don’t think they are 100% the author’s views), but perhaps she will have certain encounters that help her grow in the future?
Ms Bowen thank you for the hours and hours of entertainment and thought provoking stories.

What a waste of an opportunity *sigh*

For series stalwarts even a lousy book is a 5 star. To be surrounded by these characters even with a boring story is still more entertaining than all cozy mysteries. I’m sure I’ll start to like after a few more listens.

****spoilers****

What a waste of Mrs. Simpsons, Fig, Queenie, Claire even Binky. This had so much opportunity. At least fold in the story from Hollywood from a few books back. Georgie is still solid but all the characters are missing something. Maybe it’s Ainsley? Ainsley is horribly dull. All the books spent there suffer. They need a new location for book 19. A trip, a party with Belinda, ZsuZsu, the Kent’s, the new Royals. I liked the intro to Agatha Christie in book 17. Travel with her.

I liked the concern for Claire being in Germany, the meeting with Queen Mary and baby James. Not much else. At least they tried to jam in so many characters.

I see how this book was necessary for the chronology and abdication. I just expected so much more given the great setup. The Hollywood story might as well never happened. Also, why not just save Claire for 19. A few pages of Claire and Sir Hubert do not make enough fun.

I’d still listen and rate any of this series a 5 star.
