About this listen
This program features multicast narration.
One girl murdered...another one missing...and a medical examiner desperate to uncover the truth in When I'm Dead, the latest Black Harbor mystery by acclaimed author Hannah Morrissey.
On a bone-chilling October night, Medical Examiner Rowan Winthorp investigates the death of her daughter’s best friend. Hours later, the tragedy hits even closer to home when she makes a devastating discovery—her daughter, Chloe, is gone. But, not without a trace.
A morbid mosaic of clues forces Rowan and her husband to question how deeply they really knew their daughter. As they work closely to peel back the layers of this case, they begin to unearth disturbing details about Chloe and her secret transgressions…details that threaten to tear them apart.
Amidst the noise of navigating her newfound grief and reconciling the sins of her past, an undeniable fact rings true for Rowan: karma has finally come to collect.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Story
When the body of reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her twenty-fifth birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. A tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. Yet Columbia grad student Lena—principled, headstrong, and allergic to the spotlight—knows that can’t be the case. Despite the bitter truth that the two hadn’t spoken in two years, they were half-sisters. Lena knew Desiree. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. Something is very wrong with the facts. So why is no one listening?

Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts. A frightening pattern is emerging, but what do these nine people have in common?

Good story
Great book. Kept you guessing and wanting to keep reading until the end to find out what happened. Rowan’s part though was really hard to understand even with the volume all the way up.

Thriller/gore
The storyline, the thriller part of the book. The way the author was detailed with how the scenes were as if I created a movie in my head. It took a shock in the end.

Hard to hear and understand
Narration was difficult to understand unless it was blasting, like the narrator mumbles. The story was okay but the reaction of the parents and teenagers to a dead body is ridiculous….she trips over a body and her mom sends her to work instead of staying home! Really…who does that! Callous neighbors and town. Weird . Meh …listen at your own risk

When I'm Dead Review
I could not put this book down!! Can I say, this was such a gripping read, I was hooked from the start.
One evening Rowan, a medical examiner, and her husband Axel, a homicide detective, get a phone call that pulls them away from their daughters play to a gruesome murder scene. Leaving a distraught daughter behind who utters the words, "You will love me more when I'm dead." Arriving on the scene they discover the body of their daughter's best friend, and once they arrive home realize their daughter has gone missing. As they search for their missing daughter more secrets, lies, and deaths are revealed. It is a race against the clock to figure out who is responsible for killing young girls. Are they connected? Is Chloe still alive? Can they save her in time? Will their marriage survive this trauma?
When I picked this book as my BOTM, I had no idea that it was part of a series, luckily that didn't deter the story for me at all, actually it makes me want to go buy the previous two books and give them a read! I loved the suspense, the tensions, all the secrets and lies, the unique plot, the overall dreary atmosphere of the book. I was also a HUGE fan of the multiple perspectives we got in this book. I was guessing left and right for who the murderer could be...
***Spoilers Below ****
Okay, I was guessing left and right...at one point I even was thinking Axel did it. However, when Eddie talked to Rowan in the supermarket about his sisters favorite candy being the same as Chloe's....I knew. Honestly, such great pacing and really haunting murders. I definitely want to read Hannah Morrissey's other books!!
