About this listen
Susan Dennard's New York Times best-selling young-adult epic-fantasy Witchlands series continues with the story of the Threadwitch Iseult.
War has come to the Witchlands...and nothing will be the same again.
Iseult has found her heartsister Safi at last, but their reunion is brief. For Iseult to stay alive, she must flee Cartorra while Safi remains. And though Iseult has plans to save her friend, they will require her to summon magic more dangerous than anything she has ever faced before.
Meanwhile, the Bloodwitch Aeduan is beset by forces he cannot understand. And Vivia - rightful queen of Nubrevna - finds herself without a crown or home. As villains from legend reawaken across the Witchlands, only the mythical Cahr Awen can stop the gathering war. Iseult could embrace this power and heal the land, but first she must choose on which side of the shadows her destiny will lie.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

Story
Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as ravenous, hungry spirits. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who whisper about her scarred hands and troubled past. When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being whose extraordinary power almost consumes her - but death has come, and only a vespertine has any chance of stopping it.

So Good!
This is one series I keep coming back to, time and again, as new books come out. I usually will re-listen to the previous one, or even two or three. These characters feel like family at this point.
I was honestly a little worried about adding more to the story. Like when tv shows add another season just to make more money, and then end up killing a good thing. Not so here. The ending was wrapped up so beautifully, and yet not. Leaving the perfect set up to add more to this saga. Impressive. I'll definitely keep coming back for more.

Characters are incredible
The narrator does such an incredible job bringing these characters to life. There are so many perspectives but she’s able to capture their personalities and accents so, so well.
I also just love this series. This is supposed to be the second to last book, and I’m so sad it’s coming to an end! This book focused on Iseult more, and her story was so good. She is probably my favorite character.

A story wound around a story wound…
There are several stories within this set of books each intertwined within and about the other. The author does a wonderful job of tracking them all and making them whole.

My least favorite of the series
I don't know the author was trying but this book gave me whip lash. The story is told out of time line order and is constantly jumping back and forth between timelines. The story transitions between characters and locations almost in the same breath it's hard to follow where I'm at, who I'm hearing about. The narrative is good but she's not great at different voices for different characters making it even harder to know what's going on when these transitions happen. Most of this book I had to rewind I often felt like I missed sections. Even when I started this one I felt like I missed a whole book. The characters have little to no development, they don't do much but react to things around then. The main characters are supposed to be trained, capable women and honestly through this entire series they've just been captive or running away and rarely together. Not gonna keep this one
