Critic reviews

"Kennedy & Michael's You Only Get One Shot is quite a clever noir narrative, blending several gritty tales together into one unforgettable 'escape by your wits' premise that will keep you turning the pages in terror till the twisty end is brilliantly unveiled. Gleefully disturbing and darkly terrifying to writers like me, this is such a clever and diffuse story, with the same puzzling torment of the Saw movies, but all the grit of a pulp crime novel. If you have this book in your hands or on the screen right now, you better buy it right away, because you only get one shot...." (Michael A. Arnzen, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Play Dead)

"You Only Get One Shot gives all new meaning to a publishing deadline! Quite entertaining!" (Weston Kincade, author of the A Life of Death series)

Interesting way to weave together short stories

This book was a creative way to include several short stories as part of the main story. It was cleverly done so that it was easy to follow. Each short story was interesting on its own, and the main story tied it all together.

Jam-packed with terrors!

You Only Get One Shot by Kevin J. Kennedy & J.C. Michael, narrated by Steve White, is a tale that is just jam-packed with terrors and creativity, all pressed under the weight of a terrifying deadline!

A super compelling story that will have you on the edge of your seat! Not only is the overall storyline terrifying, but the stories within the story also hold many terrors! Even though I had already experienced this read once and remembered the majority of it, I still couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next!

The narrator does an AMAZING job!

Write or Die!

The premise of this book was unique. Four semi-famous authors receive an email instructing them to write a short story, post it online and wait to see who has written the best one. The alternative? They will die! But, only one can be named the best, so they only have a 25% chance of living no matter what they do.

The person orchestrating this contest is out for revenge on this group of authors, claiming that their rejection of a friend led to that friend's suicide. But, what will really happen to this group? Will one of them write the best story and live? This was a great way to present four short stories, then blend them together in the guise of this "contest". I was a bit put off by all the cursing, especially in an audiobook and felt like it was a bit overdone in places. I did enjoy the unexpected twist at the end, leaving the reader with so many questions!

The narrator did a great job with the various accents and added a lot to my enjoyment. I was given the chance to listen to this audioobok by the author/publisher/narrator and chose to review it.

Interesting

I found this book very unique. As it states, four horror writers have to write a story to save their lives. Lucky for us we get to hear each of these stories too. This is really four stories within a story. They were not all great, but overall the book was pretty good. The narration was a little rushed in places but he does a nice job.

I was given this book at no charge. This review was not required and is my own.

A narrative of the burdens a writer faces

"You only get one shot" This story illuminates the burdens many writers face both real and imagined. Such a clever way to express the anxieties of thin-skinned writers as they offer up the contents of their creative heart to the uncaring and sick world. I have personally encountered the type of readers that the authors discuss in the narrative arc of the character's inner and outer story. I could not stop the audiobook once I started it. The narrator's vocals were smooth and engaging even with the thick accent.
