Non-musical history for today: 2010 – Apple announced the iPad, a tablet computer. I was excited about it, but not the cost. I still have never owned on, opting instead for Amazon Kindles and Samsung Galaxy Tabs. I do own a Mac that I don't use any longer, and one of the iPod Video models, but other than that, I refuse to be an i-Hole. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for January 27. Non-musical history for today: 1971 – Charles Manson and four "Family" members (three of them female) were found guilty of the 1969 Tate–LaBianca murders. I'm sure I've talked about it before. It was gruesome, disgusting, and uncalled for. The perpetrators convicted were Tex Watson, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten, and Susan Atkins. Linda Kasabian was present at both murders but was given immunity for testifying against Manson and the family. Watson, Krenwinkel, and Van Houten are still alive. Watson has been denied parole 18 times. Krenwinkel was granted parole on May 26, 2022, but California Governor Gavin Newsom put the kibosh on that, stating that she posed an ongoing threat to society. Van Houten had the same thing happen, but an appeals board overturned Newsom's veto. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for January 25. Non-musical history for today: 1536 – King Henry VIII of England suffered an accident while jousting, leading to a brain injury that historians say may have influenced his later erratic behavior and possible impotence. So, just being an a-hole, beheading his wives, all that from horseplay (get it?)? Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for January 24. Non-musical history for today: 1957 – Inventor Walter Frederick Morrison sold the rights to his flying disc to the Wham-O toy company, which later renamed it the "Frisbee." A simple but very fun item. I spent many an hour chasing those damned things. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for January 23. Non-musical history for today: 1973 – The Supreme Court of the United States delivered its decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, legalizing elective abortion in all fifty states. However, due to the stacking of the very politically biased court that is now in place, that has been reversed, giving way to control over women's bodies and taking away their right to choose. Roosevelt and John Nance Garner were sworn in for their second terms as U.S. President and U.S. Vice President; it is the first time a Presidential Inauguration took place on January 20 since the 20th Amendment changed the dates of presidential terms.
