• Basketball Players Threatened
    Oct 17 2024

Jason & Kirk discuss WNBA star Breanna Stewart and her wife, retired basketball player Marta Casademont, going to the NYPD to report an anonymous sender threatening the couple by sending homophobic emails wishing death on them. This is one of many complaints from WNBA players about an increase in threats that contained racist & homophobic slurs. We wrap this week with a discussion on the NCAA approving the elimination of the national letter of intent program. Michael Haddix, Jr., CEO & Co-Founder of Scout joins the show. Mike discusses his work, which combines financial education, wealth management, and tax preparation, specifically designed for college athletes. Helping athletes began for Mike when he saw his father, former NFL running back Michael Haddix, Sr.'s career end before he wanted it to. Following an 8-year career, Mike Sr. didn't know how to manage his money properly. Following an awe-inspiring college basketball career, Michael worked as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs. He then moved to Octagon and managed money for many well-known athletes including, Chris Paul, Steph Curry & Michael Phelps, among many others. Scout currently works with 12 athletic departments including UCLA, Iowa & Auburn. The athletes receive financial training sessions on campus year-round learning how to design a budget, set up recurring bank deposits, make investments, and put money aside for tax purposes. Scout also provides services to teach family members of the athletes as well.

  • JuJu Watkins' Extension With Nike
    Oct 10 2024

Jason and Kirk begin with a discussion on Terrelle Pryor's lawsuit against Ohio State University, the NCAA & The BIG 10 for the using his name, image, and likeness while playing at OSU. Like Reggie Bush, former NCAA players are going to try & recoup some of the money they feel is owed to them. Bush & Pryor are the star names, but many college players are or will most likely file lawsuits. Kirk feels guys aren't suing for the money but because it is the right thing to do. The NCAA will have to address this. Discussion turns to the new lucrative deal signed by USC women's basketball star JuJu Watkins. The Nike deal gives her one of the richest shoe endorsement deals in women's basketball. The guys react to the news of Jets head coach Robert Saleh being fired after five games of the NFL season. The show ends with prayers to the folks impacted by Hurricane Milton and remembering Dikembe Mutombo who passed away last week.

  • The WNBPA v Christine Brennan
    Oct 3 2024

Jason & Kirk discuss the WNBPA's statement against USA Today columnist Christine Brennan for her questioning of Connecticut Sun's star DiJonai Carrington following a nonfoul call involving Carrington & Caitlin Clark. The guys feel this isn't a question about Brennan's line of questioning, but it is just a continuation of the atmosphere surrounding the WNBA all season long. You can understand where both sides are coming from, but there can be different sensitivity and approaches to the situation. The discussion turns to an exchange between a reporter and Draymond Green at Warriors Media Day. The reporter could have asked his question differently and gotten an answer from Draymond that wouldn't have been so defensive. The subject of the question was a fair one to ask Dray. The show wraps with a discussion about a new book on the NBA Social Justice Coalition. The book is a series of essays from members of the NBA community. The coalition, formed in 2020, is composed of five active players, five team governors, Commissioner Silver, and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. The focus is on advocacy and public support for legislation to reform criminal justice, voting rights, policing, and community safety.

The show wraps with a discussion on Reggie Bush's lawsuit seeking compensation over the use of name image and likeness. Bush is suing his alma mater USC, PAC 12 & the NCAA. Bush is suing for money those folks made from him long after he left college. After discussing Bush's career in college & the NFL, the guys wonder where this will lead to next. • Cathy Engelbert Apologizes To WNBA Players
    Sep 19 2024

Jason & Kirk discuss Cathy Engelbert's comments on CNBC and her subsequent apology to the players of the WNBA for failing to condemn racist and vitriolic behavior from fans surrounding the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese 'rivalry'. While the spike in WNBA viewership, partly due to the arrival of Clark & Reese, should be celebrated, racial undertones will only tear down the league. The show then turns to Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles continuing her fight for the Bronze Medal originally awarded to her in Paris this summer. The gymnast is appealing to the Swiss Supreme Court. Jason & Kirk feel this battle will continue for a long time, maybe into the next Olympic games in LA. The show wraps up with HBCU News & Notes including FAMU hiring Angela Suggs as their new Athletic Director, South Carolina Gamecocks Women's Basketball Head Coach Dawn Staley announcing that Coppin State will fill out their nonconference schedule this season, and reaction to Shannon Sharpe's comments that HBCUs should not take less than a million dollars to play FBS football schools.

Jason & Kirk begin breaking down the Tyreek Hill situation and his incident with Miami police ahead of the Dolphins game. The question asked was how it got to the point it got to. Kirk breaks down the situation from both sides. Both sides handled the situation incorrectly, and it should be a teaching moment. The discussion turns to MLB Reporter Ken Rosenthal's interview with recently retired Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto and Votto's comments about his position on social justice issues. Votto wore a Black Lives Matter T-Shirt during batting practice & wore a Pride hat during postgame interviews. Votto, in the interview, explains why he lends his support to social issues that don't always line up politically. Votto also explains why he strongly supported issues late in his career when most athletes try to avoid doing so. The show continues with a discussion on Nick Saban's comments crediting Deion Sanders for his impact on the SWAC and that the HBCU conference is overlooked.
