Arthur Conan Doyle's 1887 novella introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes, the brilliant consulting detective, as portrayed through the eyes of his friend and colleague Dr. John Watson, a retired army physician. In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson take on their first case together, involving a body discovered in an abandoned London house with a bloody message scrawled on the wall above.

Holmes and Watson are in Canada attending a conference on the occult, when Lord Penrose receives a message that his wife Lady Penrose has been murdered in the small village of La Mort Rouge. Holmes and Watson are about to return to England when Holmes receives a telegram from Lady Penrose, issued before her death, asking for help as she fears for her life. Holmes decides to investigate her death.

The Adventure of the Dancing Men, a Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle published as The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1905. Doyle ranked The Adventure of the Dancing Men third in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help. The other is The Five Orange Pips, part of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes was created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
