A young soldier, wounded by a bomb blast in Afghanistan, will soon be the first recipient of a penis transplant. Missing limbs are common because of war, but genital damage is a "hidden wound". If this operation is successful, many more veterans will receive new genitals. Susie reads from a New York Times article by Denise Grady, who reports that this is intended only for military vets. For anyone who lived through the 1980s AIDS crisis, watching friends dying, like the apocalypse had arrived, it seems unthinkable that today's students don't know about this recent history. December 1 was World AIDS Day. Susie starts off today's show with a discussion about why the younger generation doesn't know about the real trauma of HIV/AIDS. She reads from an article by a college professor who explains that his students think that AIDS happens to "others", who they then marginalize and write off. Wrong!
