This story was very dark however it was beautifully put together. You get the story mainly through the eyes of Shelby. Please be aware that there are r*pe scenes described in details and torture. The intro gives you an idea of what to expect. I am looking forward to starting book two! I hope it becomes available on audible soon. The narration was amazing! It really brought the book to life. Reader beware. Not for the easily offended. You’ve been warned.

The tone of the book is set by the first scene. This is not a story of the villain burning the world down for her, but the villain burning her down in secret from the world.

If you have any triggers, CHECK them, again, this is not your normal dark romance. Shelby is put through the wringer, humiliated, and broken. You get the story from her point of view and the events that lead her to that point and beyond.

There are twists that I didn’t see coming, and parts that made my heart ache for Shelby. I wanted to reach through the book and help her! I wanted to stop reading so many times but couldn’t!

The narration was well done. The style of southern accent for Shelby fits with personality and traits of the character. The emotional turmoil was portrayed exceptionally well so you knew how Shelby was feeling during the phrase before the “description” was given.

And then there was the MMC, I do NOT want to admit how well this was narrated! I do not want to like anything about this character, but there were moments…and then me thinking about the one…ugh! I am sure if I eye read this book I would have made them all sound like greasy, long mustache 70s villains!

This is one Dark story, very sad and heartbreaking 💔, and very relatable. I think what makes it hard to listen to is that this really does happen to women everywhere. All I have to say is to be very aware, I had to stop listening a few times because I couldn't handle it. but to be honest I am looking forward to the next book. because I hope she comes back and makes them pay for everything they did to her. 🥺🥺😥😥💔💔

*I can’t emphasize this enough, PLEASE check the trigger warnings for this book before you read/listen to it, the assaults are very descriptive.

That being said…. This story wrecked me in a way I was not expecting. I wanted to crawl into the pages and save Shelby Ann myself. You’ll be along for the ride, feeling helpless to do anything but hear her story as it plays out. Shelby Ann was a pawn in game she had no idea she was playing & I can only hope the conclusion comes out soon and she gets her revenge on anyone who wronged her. She deserves her HEA, or at least some semblance of justice and happiness.

The duet narration by Jake and Bridget Bordeaux was as expected from this dynamic duo - perfection!

I don’t mind a dark book but this one was a little too dark for me. Too much real time abuse and rape. Not a quick memory but full on real time not stop. Love the narrators but… Yeah…too much.
