Historia
Fans of The Conjuring and The Amityville Horror will love this chilling new novel unraveling the tale of a family haunted by the ghosts of their malevolent ancestors’ disturbing past. The decrepit well has been a fountain of terror for generations, an abyss of dread that emits tragedy and death like fog. Its darkness touched Jacob’s soul some twenty years ago, and since moving back to his ancestral home, the chilling feeling of being in front of the old well hasn’t left his troubled mind. But this time, the shadows that creep from the well have taken on a malevolent sentience, ...

AI reading is just not it
Revisado: 10-18-24
While the AI voice wasn't intolerable, it made it hard to keep engaged with the story. There were times were the inflection either wasn't there, or didn't make sense for the scene. Sometimes hard to tell who was talking as the voice was pretty much the same for all the characters. I think the story is probably pretty good, but like I said, I had a hard time keeping engaged because of the narration. Glad this was free and I didn't spend money/use a credit

Dr. Renee Caisson never expected that her scientific expertise would lead to a role playing interpreter between humans and the demonic-looking Neighbors. When the door between their worlds opened, she was drafted by the government to study the otherworldly beings and was able to prove her theory: the Neighbors had been to Earth before—and now they simply wanted to save their dying planet.

Too short!
Revisado: 05-10-24
I'm hooked in the world and want more! Narrator still isn't my favorite. Too much whispering and everyone sounds around 80 years old and they are not supposed to be. But, I did get used to it, so I'll keep listening, but would have been better with a different narrator.

Historia
Dr. Renee Caisson knows there are worse things than an attractive man in uniform drafting her into a secret government project—especially when Major Jackson makes it clear that he isn’t bothered by her questionable past. But when her labs come back with decidedly odd results, the Major is forced to come clean over who the government is actually studying. Renee is shocked to learn her subjects are demonic-looking beings who call themselves “Neighbors”—refugees from a dying world, who arrived during the nation-wide solar eclipse.

Great new story!
Revisado: 04-12-24
Narrator was a miss for me. She whisper talks and I had to have my volume up ridiculously high in order to understand what was being said most of the time. On top of that, most the characters sounded like they were 80 years old, I'm sure partly due to the whisper talking. Sometimes it got to the point of distracting enough that it took me out of the story. That said, I enjoyed this new concept from KH, it was interesting and I was hooked so it got frustrating when the narration took me out of the story. I'm looking forward to more from this series, though I may get the books if the audiobook is read by the same narrator.

I'm not a child
Revisado: 10-31-23
I had a hard time getting into the book due to the narrator's performance. She was pretty exaggerated and I felt like she was reading the story to a 5 year old at bedtime.
The story itself is okay. It's cute I suppose. I was looking for a light, easy listen, and this hits those categories so that's why I gave the story 3 stars. However, it is written like someone right out of middle school, though the narration might be a part of what makes me feel that way. Maybe it's better to read instead of listen to, but because of my listening experience, I'm not interested enough to give book 2 a try.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Wonderful
Revisado: 04-10-19
I'm a huge Stephen King fan and I put this book off for a long time because of so many bad reviews. I'm so surprised! I thought the book was fantastic! The narrator, Marin Ireland, gave a simply phenomenal reading. I will definitely be listening to this book again in the future. I feel like maybe the people that didn't like this book might need to open their minds more to the realities of the world around them. Or at least just relax a little and enjoy the performance. I typically enjoiy a book more when I read it myself, but I think this is one book where the narration took me into it in a way I wouldn't be able to have done myself.

Historia
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Awful production
Revisado: 07-02-18
This is one of my favorite Stephen King books, and I am so bummed out. Eli, the narrator, gave a decent performance. But whoever produced or edited this is utterly insane. There are weird, random, LOUD musical interludes, which, while bad, still wouldn't have been AS bad, had the music not started while the narrator was talking, or at least was kept to a very low background level. The narrator has a pretty soft voice to begin with, and when the music is playing, it is so hard to hear what he is saying. I'm really disappointed because this is one of my favorite reads, and to those reading this review, don't let this awful production stop you from trying to read the actual book, it is worth it.

Imogene is young, beautiful . . . and dead, waiting in the Rosebud Theater one afternoon in 1945. . . . Francis was human once, but now he's an eight-foot-tall locust, and everyone in Calliphora will tremble when they hear him sing. . . . John is locked in a basement stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children, and an antique telephone, long since disconnected, rings at night with calls from the dead.

Maybe better to read
Revisado: 10-28-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would probably recommend they read it instead of listing to it. The production is weirdly done. Random bursts of music that makes you think a new story is starting, but really it's just a different chapter, except sometimes a new story is starting. It is as difficult to follow along with as that sentence was.
Would you ever listen to anything by Joe Hill again?
I love his novels and would definitely listen to a novel, but probably not another short storey collection.
Have you listened to any of David LeDoux’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of his other performances, but would again. I think his performance was terrific here, but it was edited or produced badly.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival.

Would you consider the audio edition of Menagerie to be better than the print version?
I do. I think Gabra Zackman did an excellent job bringing the characters to life! All of the different accents and nuances she gave the characters were terrific.

Doesn't go anywhere
Revisado: 04-06-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anybody who doesn't mind a book that drags.
What was most disappointing about E. K. Blair’s story?
This is an almost 16 hour listen. Four hours in and I'm like, WHERE IS THIS GOING?!, it is moving so slow with little to no intrigue. It started well enough, but two hours of the most boring "getting to know each other" scene and I had to turn it off. Seriously, an hour of, hey lets go jogging together, AN HOUR! I do want to clarify I did not complete the book. Maybe it gets better? But if it was like this for 2 of the first 4 hours, it put dread in my heart wondering if the next 12 hours were going to be the same, just couldn't chance it.
What about Angelo Carillo and Piper Goodeve ’s performance did you like?
I only heard one narrator, and he brought little to no depth to the characters. I'm not sure if due to bad writing. I feel like wrong inflections were placed in certain scenes/dialogs.
