Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 22nd, 2025.

Now, today’s national holiday might not come with balloons or cake, but it’s arguably one of the most important days on the calendar – it’s the International Day for Biological Diversity. That’s right. A whole day dedicated to celebrating the incredible variety of life on Earth. From microscopic fungi to massive blue whales, nature’s basically flexing its creative muscles. And honestly, she’s got range.

In honor of this day, I’ve chosen a quote that speaks directly to the heart of it all. It comes from the legendary conservationist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough:

“It is that range of biodiversity that we must care for – the whole thing – rather than just one or two stars.”

Now, Sir David might not be talking about Hollywood, but the point still stands. We’re often dazzled by the lions, pandas, and other charismatic “A-listers” of the animal kingdom – and hey, I love a good panda gif as much as the next person – but true biodiversity is the ensemble cast. The unsung heroes. The worms, the mosses, even the bacteria you didn’t know were working overtime under your feet to keep the planet spinning.

This quote reminds you that everything in nature is connected. Caring for biodiversity isn’t about spotlighting just a few “cute” or “marketable” species – it’s about recognizing that every creature plays a role. Just like every character in a sitcom holds it together – even the weird neighbor with one line per episode.

So today, as you go about your routine, maybe take a moment to appreciate the complexity of life around you. That patch of weeds? Could be a pollinator’s buffet. That bird song? Might be a tiny soprano announcing her territory. It’s all part of the grand, messy, beautiful web.

That's gonna do it for today. But I'll be back tomorrow, same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.

Now, here’s the thing — I didn’t get the memo that it’s Talk Like Yoda Day. Which is ironic, because it’s also National Memo Day. So either someone’s playing a prank on me... or Master Yoda has taken over my calendar notifications. In honor of this unexpected twist in communication, talk like Yoda, I will. Confuse you, it may. Enlighten you, it must. Let’s move to today’s quote — another gem from the Jedi master himself:

    Yoda, once said:

"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."

Hmm. Heavy, this one is. Deep like Dagobah’s swamps, yes. Fear... fear leads to clinging. And clinging, to suffering it leads. What Yoda teaches here is detachment — not coldness, no, but clarity. To act with peace, free from fear, you must be. Mmm. Think of it this way — on Memo Day, we’re reminded of how important clear communication is. And sometimes, what clouds our communication most? Fear. Fear of saying the wrong thing. Fear of judgment. Fear of letting go of a narrative we’ve held onto too tightly. Let go, you must. Speak, you should. Even write that memo you’ve been avoiding, hmm? Fear not your inbox. Fear not the ‘send’ button. What holds you back, confront it. What weighs you down, release it. Like Yoda said — train yourself. Bit by bit. Word by word. And if today, talk like Yoda you do... well, delight your coworkers you might. Or bewilder them completely. Either way — memorable, the day will be. Thank you for joining me on this delightfully backwards, memo-filled journey. Until next time — do or do not, yes... but also: speak wisely, email boldly, and fearlessly let go.

I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for now but be back tomorrow, I will. Same pod time, same pod station.

May the quote be with you.

  • George Bernard Shaw - There is no sincerer love than the love of food

Now, let’s talk about something serious — eggs, bacon, and cheese in a pastry crust. Yes, today is National Quiche Lorraine Day, a celebration of the dish that manages to be breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one elegant, golden-brown circle. Honestly, if there were a Mount Rushmore of versatile foods, quiche would definitely be up there — probably next to pizza and the humble sandwich.

And to pair with this celebration of culinary sophistication, today’s quote comes from none other than George Bernard Shaw, who said:

"There is no sincerer love than the love of food."

Now, that’s a truth baked to perfection.

Let’s face it — food doesn’t ghost you. It doesn’t leave your texts on “read.” It shows up when you need comfort, celebration, or just a reason to pretend you’re busy so you can avoid an awkward phone call. And quiche? Quiche is like the friend who brings wine, listens to your problems, and also brought dessert just in case. It’s the real MVP of mealtimes.

George Bernard Shaw wasn’t a chef — he was a playwright. But even he understood that food speaks a language deeper than words. Sharing a meal, or even just enjoying one by yourself, is an act of self-love, of connection, of living in the moment. It’s hard to be fake around good food. You can’t pretend not to like something when your eyes are rolling back in your head from sheer deliciousness.

So today, as you consider your meal options, maybe honor the occasion with a Quiche Lorraine. Or two. It’s not just about the eggs and the bacon — it’s about celebrating that pure, sincere joy that comes with every bite.

Because the love of food? That’s the kind of love that never disappoints.

But... all in moderation or you might be showing up on January 1st with a HUGE goal to accomplish and your beloved Quiche would be off the menu for a while.

My daughter made some unbelievably tasty Quiche Lorraine for dinner the other night. They've been going to our friends cooking classes at the community centre and have learned to make some really, and I mean really delicious stuff. Last night my other daughter made Chicken Parmeson and it was so good I had to pinch myself to check if it was real or just a dream.

So as I sit back and dream about food I think that will do it for today.

I'm Pizza McGivern, I mean Andrew McGivern signing off for now but I’ll be bacon tomorrow. I mean back tomorrow, same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quiche. Croissant... Quote!
