Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 22nd, 2025.

Now, today’s national holiday might not come with balloons or cake, but it’s arguably one of the most important days on the calendar – it’s the International Day for Biological Diversity. That’s right. A whole day dedicated to celebrating the incredible variety of life on Earth. From microscopic fungi to massive blue whales, nature’s basically flexing its creative muscles. And honestly, she’s got range.

In honor of this day, I’ve chosen a quote that speaks directly to the heart of it all. It comes from the legendary conservationist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough:

“It is that range of biodiversity that we must care for – the whole thing – rather than just one or two stars.”

Now, Sir David might not be talking about Hollywood, but the point still stands. We’re often dazzled by the lions, pandas, and other charismatic “A-listers” of the animal kingdom – and hey, I love a good panda gif as much as the next person – but true biodiversity is the ensemble cast. The unsung heroes. The worms, the mosses, even the bacteria you didn’t know were working overtime under your feet to keep the planet spinning.

This quote reminds you that everything in nature is connected. Caring for biodiversity isn’t about spotlighting just a few “cute” or “marketable” species – it’s about recognizing that every creature plays a role. Just like every character in a sitcom holds it together – even the weird neighbor with one line per episode.

So today, as you go about your routine, maybe take a moment to appreciate the complexity of life around you. That patch of weeds? Could be a pollinator’s buffet. That bird song? Might be a tiny soprano announcing her territory. It’s all part of the grand, messy, beautiful web.

That's gonna do it for today. But I'll be back tomorrow, same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.

Now, here’s the thing — I didn’t get the memo that it’s Talk Like Yoda Day. Which is ironic, because it’s also National Memo Day. So either someone’s playing a prank on me... or Master Yoda has taken over my calendar notifications. In honor of this unexpected twist in communication, talk like Yoda, I will. Confuse you, it may. Enlighten you, it must. Let’s move to today’s quote — another gem from the Jedi master himself:

    Yoda, once said:

"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."

Hmm. Heavy, this one is. Deep like Dagobah’s swamps, yes. Fear... fear leads to clinging. And clinging, to suffering it leads. What Yoda teaches here is detachment — not coldness, no, but clarity. To act with peace, free from fear, you must be. Mmm. Think of it this way — on Memo Day, we’re reminded of how important clear communication is. And sometimes, what clouds our communication most? Fear. Fear of saying the wrong thing. Fear of judgment. Fear of letting go of a narrative we’ve held onto too tightly. Let go, you must. Speak, you should. Even write that memo you’ve been avoiding, hmm? Fear not your inbox. Fear not the ‘send’ button. What holds you back, confront it. What weighs you down, release it. Like Yoda said — train yourself. Bit by bit. Word by word. And if today, talk like Yoda you do... well, delight your coworkers you might. Or bewilder them completely. Either way — memorable, the day will be. Thank you for joining me on this delightfully backwards, memo-filled journey. Until next time — do or do not, yes... but also: speak wisely, email boldly, and fearlessly let go.

I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for now but be back tomorrow, I will. Same pod time, same pod station.

May the quote be with you.

  • George Bernard Shaw - There is no sincerer love than the love of food

Now, let’s talk about something serious — eggs, bacon, and cheese in a pastry crust. Yes, today is National Quiche Lorraine Day, a celebration of the dish that manages to be breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one elegant, golden-brown circle. Honestly, if there were a Mount Rushmore of versatile foods, quiche would definitely be up there — probably next to pizza and the humble sandwich.

And to pair with this celebration of culinary sophistication, today’s quote comes from none other than George Bernard Shaw, who said:

"There is no sincerer love than the love of food."

Now, that’s a truth baked to perfection.

Let’s face it — food doesn’t ghost you. It doesn’t leave your texts on “read.” It shows up when you need comfort, celebration, or just a reason to pretend you’re busy so you can avoid an awkward phone call. And quiche? Quiche is like the friend who brings wine, listens to your problems, and also brought dessert just in case. It’s the real MVP of mealtimes.

George Bernard Shaw wasn’t a chef — he was a playwright. But even he understood that food speaks a language deeper than words. Sharing a meal, or even just enjoying one by yourself, is an act of self-love, of connection, of living in the moment. It’s hard to be fake around good food. You can’t pretend not to like something when your eyes are rolling back in your head from sheer deliciousness.

So today, as you consider your meal options, maybe honor the occasion with a Quiche Lorraine. Or two. It’s not just about the eggs and the bacon — it’s about celebrating that pure, sincere joy that comes with every bite.

Because the love of food? That’s the kind of love that never disappoints.

But... all in moderation or you might be showing up on January 1st with a HUGE goal to accomplish and your beloved Quiche would be off the menu for a while.

My daughter made some unbelievably tasty Quiche Lorraine for dinner the other night. They've been going to our friends cooking classes at the community centre and have learned to make some really, and I mean really delicious stuff. Last night my other daughter made Chicken Parmeson and it was so good I had to pinch myself to check if it was real or just a dream.

So as I sit back and dream about food I think that will do it for today.

I'm Pizza McGivern, I mean Andrew McGivern signing off for now but I’ll be bacon tomorrow. I mean back tomorrow, same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quiche. Croissant... Quote!

Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 19th. Now, did you know that today is Plant Something Day? That’s right — today is your official excuse to dig into the dirt, get your hands messy, and whisper sweet nothings to a tomato plant. Whether you’ve got a backyard garden, a windowsill herb pot, or just a very patient houseplant, today is the day to put something green into the ground and see what grows. In the spirit of that, here’s your quote for today from Robert Louis Stevenson, a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer best known for classics like Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Kidnapped.

    Robert Louis Stevenson once said:

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant."

This one hits home on Plant Something Day, doesn’t it? It’s a reminder that progress isn't always loud or visible — sometimes it's just a quiet act of planting a seed. Whether that seed is literal or metaphorical — like starting a new habit, offering kindness, or learning something new — what matters is the intention behind it, not the immediate results.

In a world that constantly wants to measure output, success, and instant gratification, it’s oddly refreshing to pause and say, “Hey, I planted something today. That’s enough.” Even if the only thing you plant today is the idea that things take time. So go ahead — plant a seed, water a dream, or just repot that fern that’s been giving you the side eye for the last six months. Growth takes time, but it always starts with a little action today. Another quote of the day is in the can.... or pot. Hopefully the seeds of this quote will germinate into something good.

Today is No Dirty Dishes Day. It’s a day dedicated to not scraping dried cheese off a plate. A day that encourages you to embrace disposable dining or, better yet, eat out and let someone else worry about soap and sponges. In short—it’s not laziness, it’s observance.

    A commitment to minimalism...

There’s something beautifully symbolic about a clean sink. It means you’ve either mastered the art of minimalism or—you know—escaped doing any real work today. That brings me to today’s quote from Leonardo da Vinci, which pairs surprisingly well with a holiday that encourages a little strategic avoidance.

    Leonardo da Vinci once said:

    “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Now, Leonardo probably wasn’t standing in front of a pile of lasagna pans when he said that—but it applies just the same. No Dirty Dishes Day isn’t just about skipping chores. It’s about stepping back and simplifying. In a world that constantly piles things on your plate—literally and metaphorically—sometimes the wisest move is to clear it off and keep things light.

Da Vinci, one of the most brilliant minds in history, understood that there’s elegance in doing less. And what’s simpler than eating a sandwich off a napkin and calling it gourmet? So today, let yourself live with a little more ease. Don’t complicate your day with unnecessary clutter—physical or mental. Keep it clean, keep it simple, and remember that there’s real sophistication in choosing the easy route once in a while.

So go ahead—skip the sink, ditch the dish soap, and savor a simpler day. You’ve got Leonardo’s blessing.

That's gonna do it for today's episode... I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow - same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.

Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 17th. Now, did you pack your towel? Because today is National Learn to Swim Day – a day created to remind you that it's never too late to ditch the floaties and dive into something new. Learning to swim isn’t just about staying afloat in water – it’s a metaphor for learning to stay afloat in life. Whether you’re treading water in a new job, paddling through personal change, or just trying to keep your head above the news cycle, this day is your gentle nudge to start swimming, not sinking. That brings me to today’s quote from Anonomous, who once said:

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly."

Now I know what you're thinking – what does a butterfly have to do with swimming? Well, besides the stroke named after it, quite a bit actually. This quote speaks to transformation. Learning to swim – literally or figuratively – often begins at the point where you feel like you’re drowning in the unfamiliar. But with time, effort, and probably a little coughing up of pool water, you adapt. You grow. You float. And eventually, you soar… or at least do a half-decent backstroke.

Learning to swim will keep you safe at the beach, it can be a fun, competitive sport and it can be a skill you get well paid for as a life guard or an instructor.

And if you don't yet know how to swim... today would be the day to start learning.

So if you’re feeling stuck today, remember – it might just be the start of your metamorphosis. Caterpillars don’t stay grounded forever. And neither will you.

That's a wrap for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for today but I'll back tomorrow - same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.

Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 16th. Now, I don't know if you've ever owned a packet of powder that promised to bring tiny underwater lifeforms to your kitchen counter, but today we celebrate just that level of whimsical wonder—National Sea Monkey Day. Yes, Sea Monkeys. Those almost-microscopic creatures that look like shrimp, have the marketing power of a 1950s comic book ad, and somehow still manage to charm generation after generation. Sea Monkeys may not be real monkeys or particularly sea-dwelling, but they do embody something undeniably delightful: the magic of belief, of imagination, and of the small joys that make life a little lighter. Which brings us to today’s quote from Albert Einstein, who once said:

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world."

Now, I’m pretty sure Einstein wasn’t referring to Sea Monkeys when he said this. But then again, the man did have quite the hair—he could've passed for a Sea Monkey himself if you squinted hard enough. This quote reminds you that knowledge tells you Sea Monkeys are brine shrimp with a fancy name. But imagination? Imagination lets a child believe they’re raising a civilization of aquatic nobility, complete with underwater castles and dramatic soap opera-worthy Sea Monkey affairs.

And that’s the real takeaway today: in a world that often feels heavy with facts, deadlines, and adult responsibilities, sometimes what you really need is to sprinkle a little powdered magic into your day, stir it around, and just… watch the wonder happen.

So on this National Sea Monkey Day, give yourself permission to dream, to play, and to indulge in a little bit of creative nonsense. You might just find it makes the rest of your day feel a lot more alive—even if it doesn’t come swimming out of a plastic tank. That's it for now...

  • Jane Howard - Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one
    May 15 2025

Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 15th.

It’s International Family Day – a day to celebrate the people who know all your embarrassing childhood stories and insist on bringing them up every holiday dinner. Whether you're part of a big, loud clan or a quiet, tight-knit unit, today’s about recognizing the connections that shape us most deeply – for better or worse.

So in the spirit of family, here’s your quote of the day from Jane Howard, who once said:

"Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one."

ane Howard was an American journalist, author, and editor known for her insightful explorations of human relationships and cultural identity. She wrote for publications like Life magazine and authored several books, including Families, which delved deeply into the meaning and structure of family life.

There’s a comforting truth tucked inside these words – no matter how you define it, family is less about biology and more about belonging. It’s the people who show up, who stand by you, who remember your weird phase and love you anyway.

Jane Howard’s quote reminds you that no one is meant to go through life solo. Whether it’s your relatives, your chosen family, or even that one friend who knows your coffee order better than your birthday – these connections are the safety net that catches you when life decides to do a backflip without warning.

So today, take a moment. Text your sibling, call your grandma, or send a meme to your best friend – whatever your “tribe” looks like, let them know you’re glad they’re part of it. And if you’re in one of those families that shows love through sarcasm... well, that counts too.

I hope you carry this quote – and maybe a smile – with you through the rest of your day.

I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for today... but I'll be back tomorrow.

Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
