About this listen
Dan Rooney was one of the most influential sports executives of his generation—the man who transformed the Pittsburgh Steelers into one of the National Football League's greatest dynasties and premiere franchises. Some of Dan Rooney’s most important achievements, however, took place off the playing field as he sought to bring about equity in the league's hiring practices and peace in his ancestral homeland of Ireland. As a business leader, a philanthropist, a diplomat, and the author of the famous Rooney Rule—the pioneering hiring policy that promotes diverse leadership within the NFL—Dan Rooney was known for his core values, his quiet strength, his effectiveness, and his willingness to talk to and hear from those who disagreed with him.
In A Different Way to Win, Jim Rooney takes listeners behind the scenes and share stories of Dan Rooney’s life and achievements. This expanded audio edition of A Different Way to Win includes newly recorded conversations with business and political leaders, and some of the sports world’s biggest names, including Roger Goodell, Paul Tagliabue, Franco Harris, Mel Blount, Judy Battista, Art Rooney II, and more, with a prologue read by Bill Cowher and a foreword read by Joe Greene. The insights from the stories and conversations shared in this audiobook teach us that there’s a different way to lead and A Different Way to Win.
Read by Jim Rooney, Bill Cowher, and Joe Greene and featuring interviews with Roger Goodell, Paul Tagliabue, Art Rooney II, Mel Blount, James "Shack" Harris, Rocky Bleier, Cyrus Mehri, Ray Anderson, Judy Battista, N. Jeremi Duru, Mike Tomlin and Franco Harris.

Story
Pittsburgh's small but lucrative Cosa Nostra mafia family was on the rise in 1985 with a newly crowned Don . . . The men who came to dominate the rackets in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and West Virginia opened the family to massive profits from drug trafficking and a street tax on other criminal activities. At the same time, the Youngstown, Ohio, faction of the family launched a brutal mob war against the weakening Cleveland mafia and the Altoona, Pennsylvania, crew violently clamped down on their city.

Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.

In 2002, Bill Zehme landed one of the most coveted assignments for a magazine writer: an interview with Johnny Carson—the only one he’d granted since retiring from hosting The Tonight Show a decade earlier. Zehme was tapped for the Esquire feature story thanks to his years of legendary celebrity profiles, and the resulting piece portrayed Carson as more human being than showbiz legend. Shortly after Carson’s death in 2005 and urged on by many of those closest to Carson, Zehme signed a contract to do an expansive biography.

Story
For the ancients, everything worth pursuing in life flowed from a strong sense of justice—or one’s commitment to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult. In order to be courageous, wise, and self-disciplined, one must begin with justice. The influence of the modern world often tells us that acting justly is optional. Holiday argues that that’s simply untrue—and the fact that so few people today have the strength to stand by their convictions explains much about why we’re so unhappy.

Long before the Moneyball Era, the Earl of Baltimore reigned over baseball. History’s feistiest and most colorful manager, Earl Weaver transformed the sport by collecting and analyzing data in visionary ways, ultimately winning more games than anybody else during his time running the Orioles from 1968 to 1982. When Weaver was hired by the Orioles, managers were still seen as coaches and inspirational leaders, more teachers of the game than strategists. Weaver invented new ways of building baseball teams, prioritizing on-base average, elite defense, and strike throwing.

Story
At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated.

Fantastic story of hard working family man.
Just listening to this story from the son's point of view makes it hard to not want to root for the team. Knowing the work and effort put in by his father to help build the NFL into what it is today is astounding. The first hand accounts arr terrific and I will definitely be keeping this in my collection to listen to again.

Great cast & history of Steelers success
Very good book on the Rooney’s leadership and resulting success. Really liked interviews with various players, coaches and leaders. A definite read if you’re a Steelers (or an NFL) fan. Towards the end focused a little much on the Rooney rule.

great listen
I like the format of this audiobook. It isn't a verbatim reading of the book, but more like a long format podcast. Great stories and lessons shared in this telling.

same ole same ole
I wanted to like it but it's the same info we already knew from all the other steelers documentaries. wasted $$. Also, Art she'll was not the 1st minority coach. Art Shell himself said he wasn't & corrected the press & said it was Tom Flores.
