About this listen

Humor is the best part of baseball. To survive a long season, the everyday schedule, and the failure that is inherent in the game people have always needed a good laugh about a ballgame from time to time.

The stories in Baseball Humor: A Collection of Stories by Master Storytellers poke good fun at the struggles, ambition, greed, romance, envy, wisdom, and quirks of the players, managers, wives, and fans. Included are “The Pitcher and the Plutocrat” by P G Wodehouse, “Horseshoes” and “Alibi Ike” by Ring Lardner, “The Red-Headed Outfield” and “The Rube” by Zane Gray, and many others.

These 14 rib tickling tales were originally published in the 1910s and 1920s when Major League baseball was the only professional sport and newspapers and magazines were a major source of entertainment. While the material is from a hundred years ago the human spirit that comes out still rings true today.

Nostalgic and Funny Baseball history!

It’s not always easy to imagine a time when baseball was really America’s favorite sport. Ward Paxton, through this ebook, reminds us of an era where Baseball was truly great; not because of the huge contracts the players are currently receiving, but because of a pure love of the game!
I grew up watching baseball from time to time (not following it fanatically)… The short stories collected by Ward Paxton don’t focus on the players and their feats but on their inside humor and anecdotes.
The narration, also by Paxton, is nothing short of amazing as he can masterfully make it easy to follow the storyline, feel the humor in the situations, and guide you throughout this ebook.
At the end, it doesn’t really matter if you’re a current or previous baseball fan to really enjoy this ebook as it wasn’t really written for just the fans; if you’re a sports fan, a baseball fan, or just anyone looking for some good old humor, this book is highly recommended.

Refreshing and Fun!

Baseball is more than a sport, it is fun, emotional, grueling, and highly entertaining. This is a collection of stories from all-time greats including P G Woodhouse, Zane Gray, Ernest Lawrence Thayer, and more!

The author, Ward Paxton, chose only 14 poignant stories from hundreds. He selected those that tell the most complete story of baseball, highlighting the passion, the personal connections, and the force of America’s greatest pastime. He reveals the hidden meaning of and taboo behind the words “luck,” horseshoe, and more! He carefully selects the stories in this compilation to tell a more complete narrative and not just pick the most commonly loved stories.

As the narrator, Ward Paxton, delivers a powerful performance. He speaks clearly with a deliberate cadence. He captures and portrays the essence of each character and brings attention to the message of each vividly. His varied, intentional intonation enhances every narrative authentically and his enthusiasm is contagious!

I am not a baseball fan, but I found these stories delightful and fun! I highly recommend this collection!

Fun listen about baseball

It just took me part of the first story to get into the style of the author and his narration. Then I was into it and enjoyed the fun stories and the look at baseball a century ago. Very enjoyable.

Refreshingly humorous and nostalgic!

A refreshingly humorous sojourn back to the days before “willy nilly” rule changes and monster contracts, “Baseball Humor: A Collection of Stories from Master Storytellers” is a humorous and varied collection of stories harking back to when baseball was … well BASEBALL, a real game, played by normal men, the nations pastime, a game needing no enhancements to attract a fanbase. The players depicted in these stories are not the prima donnas in tight pants boasting big contracts and exploiting free agency of today, they are they players of days gone by, lucky to get fed, lucky to get a bed, flawed, and capable of just about ANYTHING, as you will see as you listen to this brilliant collection from days gone by! As a special treat, this collection is realistically and fantastically narrated by the author, giving this five star listen an authentic vintage feel! Don’t pass it by!

Enjoyable

Baseball Humor takes you into the world of Baseball players around 100 years ago: their dreams and aspirations, battles, rivalries, hardships, romance and fans including their personal and professional lives. This audiobook is a collection of several short stories where each story brings to the listener something special in itself.
Ward Paxton is the author and narrator of this audiobook.
I have to say that Ward has done a great job narrating this book and making this an enjoyable experience.
Ward's narration is so compelling, he let's you get immersed in the characters and the stories as if you were there in the time and place. This was consistent from beginning to end. His voice is very clear making easy to follow.
Even if you are not a fan of baseball, this audiobook is for everyone, as it is easy to understand and fun to listen to.
It was enjoyable!
