About this listen

Detective Anna Travis is called out to a motorway service station on the M1, where the body of a young girl has been found in a nearby ditch. With no apparent family, friends or connections, this victim is the latest in a string of women who have gone missing in the vicinity, with no one stepping forward to claim them.

As the investigation appears to stall, Anna receives an unexpected letter from a man she helped put away. He asks her to visit him in prison immediately, claiming to know who the killer is. With no other leads, Anna has no choice but to confront her past. But could this new line of enquiry leave her with more questions than answers?

Another excellent installment!

This is my favorite series because the stories are so
complex and engrossing. Anna does a good job though she can be naive and difficult at times. Kristen Atherton’s narration is spot on and I could listen to her narrate anything.

Boring and predictable

I have been suffering through the Anna Travis series because I have an annoying habit of finishing what I start. Unfortunately, so does Lynda LaPlante. I suppose I hoped the stories would get better with time, but they just get more boring and predictable. LaPlante has no flair for the murder mystery twist - the suspected killer is always the actual killer and her books drag on endlessly just to arrive and the inevitable lackluster conclusion. Mixed in with this is the painful personal life of Anna Travis, who could not be more unlikable if she tried. In every story she ends up in bed with a witness, suspect or coworker connected to the case and surprisingly (not) it all goes wrong. This redundant narrative is topped off with the warped relationship she has with DCI Langton who somehow ends up running all of her cases even though he’s moved up and on in his career. The back and forth between them is both creepy and ridiculous. Neither of them are likable at all so you can’t even root for their relationship. If I wasn’t a glutton for punishment, I’d have stopped listening books ago, but I have two more to suffer through before I can finally say goodbye to this snooze of a series.
