Publisher's summary

Sometimes one moment defines a man.

For homicide detective Mac, it's been a good year. Having Tony to go home to makes him a better cop and a better person. For Tony, it's been hard being in love with a man he can't touch in public. Evasions and outright lying to friends and family take a little of the shine off his relationship with Mac, but Tony is determined to make it work.

As the Minneapolis Police Department moves into a hot, humid summer, Mac is faced with a different challenge. A killer has murdered two blond women, and the police have no real clues. Mac hates to think that another murder may be the only way they'll make progress with the case. But when that murder happens, it hits close to home for Tony. And suddenly Mac faces an ultimatum: Come out into the sunlight and stand beside Tony as his lover, or walk away and live without a piece of his heart.

Great middle book

I’ll start by saying I love Mac and Tony. They work in so many ways and yeah, I was sorry at the end of book 1 that they couldn’t come out as a couple, but I respected the choices they made. The way they shared a special relationship while also being part of their kid’s lives (Mac’s daughter and Tony’s best friend’s son who he spends tons of time with). Things are going along well in this book until a murder threatens to destroy everything they’ve built. I’ll admit it – I worried. Mac’s so far in the closet that he can’t even see a sliver of daylight and Tony’s suddenly fighting to keep what he has and can’t be worried about hurting Mac.

It's a mess.

But Kaje gives her characters great conflict with the promise of great resolution. I wasn’t sure how far the resolution would take me, given there are other books in the series. But I was uniquely satisfied with this ending. Oh, and you know, serial killer and all that stuff as well. Everything just worked seamlessly and I can’t wait for the next book.

I will also say I think JF Harding is the perfect narrator for this series. He does a great job with Mac and Tony and yet also does brilliantly with the kids.

fantastic!!

Breaking Cover is the second story featuring Mac and Tony. The story moved along a bit slower than Life Lessons although I feel this one was better. We get a bit more of Tony in this story, he feels grittier. I didn’t like how they couldn’t come out together at the end of the first book. I felt so many emotions because of that going into this one. J.F. Harding did a fantastic job with his narration, well done! But overall, fantastic story! Well written with great pacing!

A Fantastic Mystery & JF Harding!

Breaking Cover is the second novel in Kaje Harper’s recently re-released Life Lessons series. Not only do the Life Lessons books have gorgeous new covers, but they’re now available in audio, beautifully performed by the amazing JF Harding! This is the continuing story of Mac and Tony, so you’ll need to listen to this series in order.

Whether you’ve taken a two week break between the stories, or it's been a few years, Kaje Harper flawlessly slips in the background facts, which makes it all seem so natural. All the details will snap vividly back into place, like no time at all has passed. Within the first chapter you’ll be all caught up.

In addition to facing one of the most intense mysteries of his career, Mac deals with some emotional challenges in his personal life in Breaking Cover. Forced to stand up to the judgment of his peers, and the scorn of his daughter's caregiver, Mac finds the courage he needs to come out. These are welcome advancements in his romance with Tony, and begin a monumental change in his relationship with his daughter. Kate Harper writes Mac a heartfelt and moving journey.

For Mac, coming out forces him to confront the bigotry and danger local kids face every day. With the help of his boyfriend Tony, they are determined to make the world as safe as possible, and help the local youth learn some important survival skills. The events in Breaking Cover are a meaningful commentary on the state in most of the USA today, and Kaje Harper leaves us with a hopeful message.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to JF Harding narrate before, Kaje Harper’s Life Lessons series is the perfect opportunity. Mr. Harding’s emotional delivery packs a punch, and in addition to the exciting mysteries, the romance between Mac and Tony is one for the ages! I’m anxiously awaiting the audiobook release of the third book in the series, Home Work.

Intense!

This book made me cry so hard but I'm so happy with how it ended. I love Mac and Tony, and Ben and Anna. This is such a good book. I stayed up all night listening to the audio book. I love the narrator.

Great Series

I am absolutely loving this series. This especially just sucked me right in and kept me hooked all the way through. When you add the narration by J. F. Harding, it becomes even more amazing. I can't wait to start book 3.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Just as good as the first

J.F. Harding sure can tell a story. Kaje Harper sure can write a story. this is book two, you really need to enjoy the first book before listening to this one. This story definitely keeps you not only interested but, on the edge of your seat. Its not just a closeted never coming out story. its a mystery murder gay romance that is outstanding. In not sure what else could happen with this couple but, I'd love to see there be more stories. These will most certainly be books I go back to listen to over and over. so glad I got to listen and review it. Get these books, the Audible is outstanding and you'll enjoy them from start to finish.

Free at last!

The name for this book was perfectly titled. Mac was breaking cover for all kinds of reasons but the main ones he did for family and love. I swear I had to give Tony credit...he put up with a lot to be with Mac...knowing myself I probably would have gave up...NOPE...not Tony...his love for Mac was strong. Mac had major love for Tony too but too many fears held him back. While going through their relationship drama there was a mystery to solve that was very interesting and kept me engaged and I couldn't stop listening. It was kind of angsty but I put up with it because the story had me and I just had to know how this ended. It ended well for a HFN. The narrator did a great job...liked his tone and effect with the different characters. Now I gotta listen to the next one because of the way it ended...just gotta see how Mac is living now after breaking cover.

Another great one

Another great audio treat. Just as good as a number one, great thrill aspect, good plot, and interesting secondary characters. For those who have enjoyed Ms. Harper’s The Rebuilding Year, as I did, bear in mind that this series has quite a bit more heat, which I definitely appreciated. Highly recommended
