Publisher's summary

Caleb's finest hour is his deepest secret. Not even his parents knew what really happened after three nights in the wilderness. Now another school, another class, and another group of kids who were not his friends.

Finding Caleb is the story of the new kid with a secret. The brutal summer storm, in the dark, in the Wyoming wilderness, hungry and alone, Caleb hears an animal approaching his survival shelter. Does anyone know or care that he has been missing for three days? In a flash of lightning, his fears come alive in the dark form of a creature. He feels the warm breath on his hand, his face. Then the animal turns and vaults into the dark. When it returns, Caleb is no longer afraid.

Now, in a new school, he is lost again...friendless. When he boldly tells his story of survival to a group of elite students who have never been out of walking distance of a McDonalds, friendships form and even romance blooms.

Author and rescue-dog handler Scott Hammond's Finding Caleb, the first book in the Search and Rescue Dog Series is a story of hope about a loyal dog whose mission is to bring people home. It is a must-listen for any wandering teen wondering how to connect with the real world.

Great find - Finding Caleb

We were delighted to read “Finding Caleb” by Scott Hammond, an excellent book for many reasons. First, the novel provides a gripping tale of happiness as an anxious boy and later as a young man, finds love and acceptance through a rescue dog and new-found friends. This survival story keeps the reader/listener alert imagining what he or she might do when confronted with such challenges. The author adeptly uses vivid description, humor, reason, and emotion to lead us through the tale. Listening to the audio version enabled us to experience the work in Scott's own voice with the sparkle, emphasis, and perplexity he intended. The musical snippets between chapters provided smooth transitions from scene to scene as the drama unfolded. We plan to share this book with friends and family while awaiting the next search and rescue novel Hammond creates from his own first-hand experiences doing this life-saving work in the wilderness.

A good dog hero story

The story itself is very good. There are added elements that kept breaking my attention to the story line but overall it was able to keep me focused on needing the next set of details.
The chapter breaks with its little jingle was definitely distracting.
I would still recommend this book if you are wanting a little bit of heart break and feel goods. This book will leave you with the feeling you get when you run your fingers through a dogs mane.

Great tale of finding yourself and being found

A heart warming story of a young boy that found himself, and where he belongs. He learns that he really can be loved and accepted and learns to love and accept himself, and his family. It’s describes the bond between a hero and his hero dog and the child that they saved
It is also about the real-life heroes in this world. Some have two feet and some have four paws, but they are still very much heroes. The men, women and dogs that dedicate their lives to rescuing others and reuniting people with their family and friends, even at great risk to themselves. The true selfless love these heroes have for strangers is truly remarkable, humbling and very rare. The author of this book is one of those heroes, with a hero dog. What a remarkable duo!
