Publisher's summary

Forget everything you thought you knew about how to motivate your child - at school and at home, or to simply get them to listen to you. Unlock the power of routines for a greater family life, to raise responsible children, and to enjoy hassle-free days!

The secret to good behavior and self-confidence, or even high performance, has little to do with attention or talent. It lies mainly with what we repeatedly and regularly do. In today's fast-paced and turbulent world, what makes the biggest difference in terms of thriving and happiness for kids (and for parents) is essentially the craving for learning, creating new things on your own, and making sound decisions for yourself. And this emotional intelligence can be cultivated from an early age through repetitive and positive habits.

You can teach your child to be more patient, more independent, and to take responsibility for their satisfaction, even as a toddler and without being lavish nor extremely severe in your parenting style. Positive habits can also help you as a parent to free up time and connect deeper with your child. Say goodbye to constant arguing, raise confident and caring children who thrive, and have more fun in your parenting role.

Inside the audiobook, you'll discover:
  • How children can amazingly become more cooperative and respectful and grow into extraordinary adults equipped with powerful mental tools for life,
  • What a routine is (for instance, for a smooth, on-time morning) and how to successfully install it in your home within 30 days,
  • How to break a bad habit without drama,
  • Plenty of examples and daily life stories from our family with two young boys (ages two and five),
  • And my favorite, most powerful habits (hint: my secret pause button).

Routine is Good...and Keeps Children Calm

Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed Joni Abbott's voice for this material.

There are some good ideas and probably some useful tips in this short listen. However, the author comes across as just a bit smug in telling you how easy you can have it with your children if you would just instill some routine in your life and how great her process has worked on her own little ones.

I didn't get many practical application tips from her in listening, and believe me, I wanted to. My children are challenging: I have an asberger's teenager and an extremely energetic 7 year old! All in all, though, there was just not enough above and beyond what simple common sense will tell most people to implement to keep children interested in compliance.

On the positive side, this is a quick listen and it does go into the reasons why your children consistently don't do as they are asked and it does acknowledge and even emphasize that your own behavior impacts how your children behave.

I received this book for free through Audiobook Blast in exchange for an honest review.

Kid's learn by Example - Routines - Habits

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book because it is filled with great reminders on how to implement routines or habits that add to the nurturing of a family, or rather creates a better environment in which to nurture a family. I liked the early material about how habits benefit families, but valued even more the examples and techniques shared later in the book that can be added to my routines as a parent, and our routines as a family!

What was one of the most memorable moments of How habits influence children, and parents too!?

I loved the suggestion to make sharing your story a 'habit'. I liked how this habit actually adds to my relationship with my children, whereas many other habit suggestions found in other books are aimed at simply making life as a parent easier. Sharing stories with our children is a nice way of taking a routine day and adding to it; to help our children see that we have our good days and our bad days, that we have tasks we enjoy and don't enjoy, but we tackle them all the same!

Which character – as performed by Joni Abbott – was your favorite?

This wasn't a fiction book, so there wasn't a certain character that the reader Joni Abbott performed well. However, she was enjoyable to listen to and I felt that her delivery of the content was engaging. This helped in absorbing the material. If she had been monotone, I'm sure I would have zoned out and not really have gained as much as I did from her reading. Again, she delivered the content well. I enjoyed listening to her reading of this book.

What did you learn from How habits influence children, and parents too! that you would use in your daily life?

In the beginning of the book I learned about habits and routines and why they're so powerful for us as parents and for children who are looking to us as parents; as their guide and providers of a stable nurturing environment in which to grow up. Later in the book was the fun ideas and suggestions of routines or habits to implement. I particularly liked the sharing personal stories suggestion, days when the word 'No' is avoided, or what sounds similar, a 'Yes' day. We want our kids to grow up to be optimistic and I think these little life hacks will help in that. We personally, want our kids to also develop a sense of gratitude for the simplest of things so that they're happy with whatever situation they find themselves in and enjoy the journey of life instead of spending it wishing for more or thinking they'll be happy when XYZ happens. Using the tips from this book, I believe we'll be well suited to implement routines that help us as parents to nurture our children more effectively.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this audio book. The later half was my favorite, but that's true of most non-fiction books. I liked the suggestions and personal stories provided by the author. It was a shorter book, but I liked that too. One pet peeve of mine is when half of a book is spent telling the reader why the author wrote a particular book. I appreciate learning new things and liked that this book was long enough to add value, but wasn't too long or filled with excess 'fluff'! Overall, I enjoyed this audio book.

A Great Audiobook for Zen Parenting

"How habits influence children, and parents too!" was a great listen. I can relate to a lot of this. The idea of being involved and singing to get things done is fantastic and I can imagine kids love it. It reminds me of "Whistle While You Work." Within this book ANNA ANDERSEN has some great practical ideas. This is also along the lines of thinking outside the box. Parents need to stay consistent as well for these adjustments to stick.

JONI ABBOTT did a great job lending her vocal talent to this book. She spoke with an upbeat, positive tone which is perfect for this type of book. Overall, I'd say yes to this audiobook.
