From an Emmy award-winning journalist and documentary filmaker, this menopause manual cuts to the chase so you can take back control of your body, your confidence—and your life.

How To Menopause is packed with actionable steps and evidence-based tools from a team of 42 experts including neuroscientists, menopause-certified physicians, sex and relationship therapists, sleep doctors, and a variety of lifestyle mentors.
Synthesizing research, stories, and strategies in a way that only an investigative journalist can, Tamsen Fadal helps you:
- be your best advocate in a medical system not designed to treat women in midlife
- understand the options that tame your symptoms, whether it’s hormone therapy, supplements, or lifestyle changes
- have science-backed strategies to get the best sleep of your life
- be able to talk to your partner about sex, low libido, painful intercourse, or how your hormones might be impacting your relationship
- update your style (hair, makeup, clothes) to match your changing body
- learn simple workouts, skincare tips, and delicious recipes to deal with belly fat, dry skin, and hair loss
And much, much more.
How to Menopause answers all the questions you’ve been too nervous to ask, and brings you into a conversation with millions of other women. Together, we can embrace a stronger, sexier self at every stage of midlife–from perimenopause through menopause and into our "bolden" years.

Story
At thirty-six, Naomi Watts had just completed filming King Kong and was trying to start a family when she was told that she was on the brink of menopause. It is estimated that seventy-five million women in the United States are currently dealing with menopause symptoms (dry itchy skin, raging hormones, night sweats), and yet the very word “menopause” continues to be associated with stigma and confusion. With so little information, many women feel unprepared, ashamed, and deeply alone when the time comes. This is the book Naomi Watts wishes she had when she first started experiencing symptoms.

Menopause hit Darcey Steinke hard. First came hot flashes. Then insomnia. Then depression. As she struggled to understand what was happening to her, she slammed up against a culture of silence and sexism. Some books promoted hormone replacement therapy. Others encouraged accepting the coming crone. Beyond that, there was little that offered a path to understanding menopause in a complex, spiritual, and intellectually engaged way.

There’s not enough talk around women’s health, and what little there is rarely helps. Women are routinely warned, lectured, or threatened about their health. Or they are ignored, dismissed, or shamed. But they are rarely empowered. And empowerment, more than anything, is what women—and women of color, in particular—need. Grown Woman Talk is for every woman who has felt marginalized or overwhelmed by a healthcare system that has become more impersonal, complex, and difficult to navigate than ever.

After going to multiple doctors who ran test after fruitless test, she was surprised to finally discover the culprit—perimenopause. For more than two decades, Jancee had been reporting on mental and physical health. So if she was unprepared for this, what about all the women who don’t write about health for a living? Story
More than 70% of women experience musculoskeletal symptoms like joint pain, muscle loss, and reduced bone density as they enter perimenopause and menopause. These symptoms—what Dr. Vonda Wright refers to as the "musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause"—can often set women up for broken bones, increasingly limited mobility, and reduced independence later in life. Indeed, as Dr. Wright explains in Unbreakable, because we tend to ignore the fitness of our skeletal muscle—the engine that drives our healthspan—our muscles and bones can get weak and crack under our own weight.

Story
For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the medically approved way to alleviate menopausal symptoms (ranging from hot flushes to brain fog) and reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis. But when a large study by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) announced, with national fanfare, that women taking HRT had an increased risk of breast cancer, women were scared off, and the treatment was abandoned.

Learning to be kind to myself
I’ve listening to this books and understanding a lot of things that are happening to me. I will naturally try to support my needs and address anything that is needed to my doctors when I go. For now, being kind to myself is a priority, if I feel confident in my care, I will be able to take care of my family as well. This book will help you in your journey I’m sure.

Best book on the subject of menopause yet!
All menopause books that I have read/listened to up until now all try to push you in the direction of HRT only. This book is the absolute most perfect book on this subject. It tells you why your body does what it does and it tells you how it will affect your life. It pushes nothing - but rather it educates you on everything. I wish this author would write a second book on this topic going into more of a deep dive on the physical aspect of menopause and how we can mitigate the changes in depth. Loved loved loved this book!

I’m 41 and it think I got this just in time to be prepared for the changes. I am beginning to see some of the symptoms, and know that it’s part of this transition helps. I want to gift it to all the women in my circles. Specially those in denial, this would give you tons of helpful information.
