About this listen
Much has been written about the similarities and differences between the Orthodox and Evangelical faiths. In this book, Fr. Lawrence Farley provides a concise and non-confrontational summary of the major issues that divide the two. Evangelicals inquiring into Orthodoxy, Orthodox Christians who want to speak knowledgeably with evangelical friends, and Orthodox Christians who simply wish to understand and appreciate their own tradition more fully will find this book useful and accessible.

Story
The modern world doesn't acknowledge but is nevertheless haunted by spirits—angels, demons, and saints. In our time, many yearn to break free of the prison of a flat, secular materialism, to see and to know reality as it truly is. What is this spiritual reality like? How do we engage with it well? How do we permeate everyday life with spiritual presence?

Story
Anyone who prays or has tried to pray and given up in discouragement knows praying, really praying, is not easy. Praying consistently seems almost impossible. Too often and too easily, prayer becomes a burden: one more item on an already overcrowded to-do list. Failing to pray becomes a source of guilt and stress as we must once again admit our inconstancy and procrastination to our father confessor. The purpose of this audiobook, then, is not to add to the burden, but to ease it by distilling the advice and experience of those who pray.

Story
Most books aimed at introducing Orthodoxy to the non-Orthodox begin by explaining basic points of doctrine and practice that differ from what the average reader may be familiar with. But for the average American, this approach doesn't go deep enough. In order to be able to fully understand Orthodox doctrine and practice, we have to unlearn an entire secular worldview and become participants in a sacramental worldview instead of a worldview that embraces reality as it truly is.

For Protestants or Catholics seeking to understand Eastern Orthodoxy, the Cross is a good place to start. In the West a multitude of different views sprang up over the last millennium, but Orthodox Christian beliefs have remained unchanged. The contrast between those views is suggested by the two images on the book's cover, showing how differently the meaning of the Cross was understood, East and West.

Story
How do we acquire this mind of Christ and where is it to be found? For the Orthodox Christian, salvation is the acquisition of this mind of Christ which is to be found in the Church. This acquisition moves us from the image of God to the likeness of God; through our obedience to this call we begin to know God and this knowledge is eternal life (John 17:3). This small book hopes to begin to answer how acquiring the mind of Christ is possible and why it is necessary in our lives today.

What does it mean to "think Orthodox"? What are the unspoken and unexplored premises and presumptions underlying what Christians believe? Orthodox Christianity is based on preserving the mind of the early Church, its phronema. Dr. Jeannie Constantinou brings her more than 40 years' experience as a professor, Bible teacher, and speaker to bear in explaining what the Orthodox phronema is, how it can be acquired, and how that phronema is expressed in true Orthodox theology.

Rev. Dr. Stephen De Young, creator of the popular The Whole Counsel of God blog and podcast, traces the lineage of Orthodox Christianity back to the faith and witness of the apostles, which was rooted in a first-century Jewish worldview. The Religion of the Apostles presents the Orthodox Christian Church of today as a continuation of the religious life of the apostles, which in turn was a continuation of the life of the people of God since the beginning of creation.

Story
A dedicated group of Orthodox monks (who wish to remain anonymous) have created a fresh English translation of the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Psalter, corrected to the Septuagint. A frequently asked question: The Psalms aren't in numerical order in this Psalter. Why is that? Answer: That was done intentionally. This edition of the Psalter was created for prayer, at home or in church, rather than for reference. It's not just another Book of Psalms.

Story
Speaking to non-believers and believers alike, Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick attempts to create a sacred space in which we can encounter God. In this compact volume, he distills the essence of the traditional Christian faith, addressing the fundamental mysteries of where God is, who God is, why we go to church, and why Christian morality matters. If you’ve only heard about the Protestant or Roman Catholic version of Christianity, what he has to say may surprise you—and make you long to encounter God in Jesus Christ.

What does man seek in religion, and what should he seek in it? How does God reveal Himself in order to bring man to a knowledge of the Truth? How does suffering help this revelation to occur? These and other questions were discussed by Fr. Seraphim Rose, an Orthodox Christian monk from the mountains of northern California, during a lecture he gave at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1981. The contents of this lecture comprise the present book, which includes Fr. Seraphim’s answers to questions asked by the university students.

Story
Many Christians today divide ancient Jewish and Christian literature into two categories: what is in the Bible and what is not. The Christian East, however, has traditionally described a third category considered beneficial for Christians to listen to in the home: “apocrypha.” These texts, from the centuries before and after the Incarnation of Jesus Christ—beyond even the larger canons of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Old Testaments—reveal to us the religious world and theological framework of the apostles and early Church Fathers.

Story
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Quick listen, comprehensive but approachable too
The audiobook was a super quick listen that felt comprehensive, but also approachable for someone who isn't deeply knowledgeable about theology. I think a lot about Constantinou's Thinking Orthodox and the idea that when you're steeped in the Orthodox tradition, it can be hard to see from outside of your own phronema. In many ways, Living Faith did that for me.
Thank you to Ancient Faith Publishing for a complimentary copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Clear and Concise
Living Faith: An Orthodox Christian Conversation with Evangelicals, by Archpriest Lawrence Farley, is a book I wish I had available years ago when I converted from Baptist to Orthodoxy. Most of the Orthodox Christians I knew after my conversion were cradle Orthodox (Greek, Russian, Romanian) and we sometimes had challenging conversations because they did not understand my background. In the same respect, my family and friends did not understand my conversion and often questioned a great deal of my “new” beliefs, and I was certainly not equipped to answer and fear some of my conversations may have alienated me from both my Orthodox friends and my Evangelical friends and family. Many of the challenging conversations happen because although we use the same words, like salvation and communion, the meanings are quite different. I have been Orthodox now for almost 30 year and I still have trouble explaining the differences, but I would feel completely comfortable offering this book to someone to provide explanation and context. While there are multiple books written about the differences between the two denominations (for lack of a better word), Fr. Lawrence’s book is a quick and “easy” read. He is matter of fact in his explanations of the differences and how the Orthodox viewpoint impacts the walk of Faith and path to Salvation. Where some of the other books on this topic are more academic, Living Faith seems to be almost pastoral in explanation. He also takes time to explain the Evangelical viewpoint along with its history, which I believe is extremely helpful both to a new convert as well as someone exploring or challenging Orthodox beliefs. I really enjoyed this book, not only for the contrasts and comparisons, but also for the reminder of all the riches and fullness of the Orthodox Faith. Thanks be to God. I listened to the audible version and narrator John Maddex was superb (as always).

Thoughtful Conversation
I really appreciate how thoughtful and precise Farley is while being concise and brief.
Because of the small nature of this book, it leaves much out so one must read through the nuance and decide whether or not to continue with further study.
He graciously presents the Evangelical’s beliefs, biases and thoughts. He then proceeds to share the Orthodox understanding of each belief.
This is an excellent introduction to Orthodoxy for Evangelicals and a very necessary read for the Orthodox Christian who would like to have a conversation with Evangelicals.

A good book in a crowded space
I was given a review copy of this book, but the thoughts of the review are my own.
This book is a brief primer hitting on the major points of disagreements between Evangelicals and Orthodox. The tagline seems a bit strange because it reads more as if it was written to Orthodox to point out differences they’ll run into when dialoguing with Evangelicals. This is also a crowded space with many books already written contrasting differences between Protestantism and Orthodoxy. Its existence begs the question of do we really need another one of these books written? My guess is this book is Fr. Farley’s attempt at fixing a few shortcomings with other popular titles in this genre and presenting a better alternative, and if that’s the criteria to grade the book on I think he’s quite successful. This book distinguishes itself in some notable ways to justify another interfaith book being added to the pile. First off this book is quite short while still being information dense, I think this will definitely help people when giving it to a friend so you aren’t giving them too much homework. Secondly, another notable difference is this book isn’t written at all in a combative fashion, it simply presents the author’s points and moves along. The average reader likely will not find anything new or compelling in these pages, which is totally fine given the purpose of this book, and can probably skip it.
