About this listen

A heartwarming story of friendship and demonic possession.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby.

Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries - and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

Fun!

Fun! Super glad it's in the Plug Catalogue! I wasn't a child of the 80s but still enjoyed it. Genuinely creeped me out too!

Initially enjoyable...but wore thin after a while...

I really enjoyed the initial concept, attention to 80’s detail & storyline. However, as the book continued, the concept & story became “thin.”
It’s an OUTSTANDING short story, stuffed with unnecessary “filler” & stretched into what became a weak novel.
Truthfully, I’m not a writer, so who am I to judge!
I’ve really enjoyed Hendrix’s other work and I liked this concept...but it wore me out!

I’m not mad at it .

This book was odd, funny, corny, heartwarming, and a pretty good paranormal story. I know those things don’t seem to go together at all , but it was a good mix.
There were times it seemed to drag out a bit, but I’m not at all mad at the time I spent on it. I say give it a try!

Nostalgic, creepy, Halloween fun at itstop finest!!

If you're a fan of the great horror films of the 80s, remember anything about that era, want the horror equivalent of Ready Player one, with some great moments, and a friendship story to rival any out there? Then, dive into this one headfirst. Andhold on. This is the first book by Grady Hendrix I've read. I'm a fan. A huge fan. He has all the feels. And surprises. This is one you betterhold on once you grabit because it's relentlessly surprising, funny downright scary, (in a fun way) and emotionally gripping. I absolutely enjoyed this one. And, the narration deserves its own review alone. But, since I can't dothat, here it is. Emily Wu Zeller, you're awesome. That's all. Ok, not totaly all, but Ms Zeller knocked this one out of the park. I love anythingshe narrates anyway, but this one blows anything else out of the water4characters, reactions, sounds, even the creepy vocal ones, she does a great job. I'd love the chance just to talk to her and meet her just to say I met one of the most awesome narrators out there. She doesn't disappoint there at all. Her voice is like that glowing lamp you used to flick on to read in bed with forever ago. You can't dim it, turn it off or stop until you finish it. She gives the story just an extra drive. No matter the genre, author1she adds a flare all her own that just, makes it. Top to bottom. Great job Grady and Emily. I'm on the hunt for more. Just what the doctor ordered with Fall blowing in as we speak. Have fun yall. Happy reading.

Good exorcism story, cheezy narration.

great characters, great writing, but I found myself wanting to kick the narrator in her throat, because of her Mickey Mouse Club, childish, overexuberant narration. Everytime she did a mans voice I found my toes curling.

Rent This, Don't Bother Purchasing

"Beaches" meets "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" is about right and would have been really good, except it kept on and on without reason after the exorcism. The front was a bit long, but wasn't too long and drug out like the last section. I'm sure if you read the book the voices and sarcasm that would be in your head would make some parts really funny, but the audio performance lacked that.

Read it or check it out from the library -- this audiobook format isn't worth purchasing as I can't think of a reason to listen to it again.

Fantastic mix of horror and coming of age

For starters, this is a outstanding coming of age book. As someone who was a teenage girl in the 80's, Hendrix managed to capture exactly what it was like to live that life. I could relate so much to Abby, I almost felt I could have written her story. The eighties are definitely part of the book, but they aren't shoehorned in for nostalgia. You almost forget, until you realize there are no cell phones, no internet, etc.

And then the horror kicks in. And it's mostly subtle. Never overdone. Never unnecessary. You aren't sure which direction the book is going to go. And the narration is perfect.

Pretty good book. My only issue was there were numerous times volume was too low.
