About this listen

Audie Award, Romance, 2012
RITA Award Winner, Best Romantic Suspense, 2012

It was one of Eve Dallas’s earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he’s not behind bars anymore.

After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind. One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent - when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes. His other goal: to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago, now a high-profile lieutenant in the NYPSD and married to one of the city’s richest men.

Commanding Eve’s attention with a chilling and brazen crime, McQueen sets off the chase - forcing Eve down a road marked with blood and tears, a road that eventually leads southwest to Dallas, Texas, the home Eve fled long ago. And each new twist brings her closer to the harrowing memory of when she wasn’t a hardened detective but a vulnerable girl just like McQueen’s innocent prey. As her husband, Roarke, tries to rescue her from the nightmares that claw at her mind, and her partner, Peabody, doggedly works to support her, Eve must confront - and call upon - the darkest parts of her own soul in order to survive.

NY to Dallas

One of the things I love most about the in Death series, is how the characters, especially Eve, have evolved over time. The author manages to keep Eve's toughness, while allowing her to show her softer, loving side, and also keep the raw terror of her childhood memories. It is brilliant, and the narrator is perfect. She is Eve, as well as all the other characters. I especially love her portrayal of Peabody. I definitely recommend New York to Dallas.

Love JD Rob's In Death Series-Hated Narrator!

What did you love best about New York to Dallas?

EVERYTHING!

What was one of the most memorable moments of New York to Dallas?

ALL OF IT

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I hate the acting on all the other characters, exept Dallas, but they all make this book great, but this narrator, just does not match my descriptions of them. She makes them sound so geeky, and ughh bad... in general, no I just did not like her.

Another great J. D. Robb story

The human relation jokes and the interaction of Dallas with everyone is what makes the In Death series the greatest.

In this book, Dallas has to interact with people that she didn't really know, one of her biggest "fears". But things seemed to work out well. It was a nice difference to the usual stories and her interactions with her friends.

Another Good One

What made the experience of listening to New York to Dallas the most enjoyable?

I abosolutely LOVE Susan Ericksen. She makes the characters come alive!!

What did you like best about this story?

We got all of Eve's backstory.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes!! She is the reason I have listened to this entire series of books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Eve and Roarke's talk with Dr. Mira in the hotel in Dallas - it was so emotional. We ususally don't see Eve so ungaurded. And all the scenes with Galahad - I love that cat!

Any additional comments?

I did really miss the New York characters in this book - I have come to love Somerset, Peabody, Ian and Feeney.

OMG

I know that I keep saying this but, every book gets better and better!

This was fabulous. Learning about the horror of Eve's early life and reliving it with her was so gut wrenching.

Both Robb and Ericksen use their skills of words, language and voice to draw you into the story. You can't help your self, you become a fly on the wall and are right there in the story.

I am so hooked!

So Hard On My Emotions

Would you listen to New York to Dallas again? Why?

Yes even if it nearly killed me the first time around.

What was one of the most memorable moments of New York to Dallas?

the way that Roarke wouldn't let her go to Dallas alone and when they got there was a strong shoulder to lean on. Plus we have some backstory on Eve that was cool but heartbreaking at the same time.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

All of them. She does great to make them all my favorites in there special way.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had a really hard time with this one for the fact that it dug deeply into Eve's past, and watching her deal with it all hurt a lot.
