Publisher's summary
This novel of 67,000 words is a sweet and clean variation of Pride and Prejudice written from a Christian perspective. The characters meet as children and grow in understanding of themselves and each other over the period of Elizabeth at age five until her marriage. There are no super-villains to wreak havoc on our heroes or heroines in this low-angst retelling.
Except: Summer 1796 -
On a mild summer day in Hertfordshire, Lady Anne Darcy sat in the shade of the terrace overlooking the generous expanse of manicured lawn behind their leased estate. Netherfield Park was an agreeable location to rest. It was close enough to London to be convenient for her husband, James, to conduct business with his solicitors and manage his various investments. More importantly, it was free of the stench of London during the heat of summer and gave her ladyship a quiet place to recover from the birth of her baby daughter.
Hearing raucous laughter, she looked up to continue her watch of the children of various ages and sizes gamboling about the green space before her. She smiled as she realized that one little girl was engaged in warfare with the group of boys, slashing her stick sword about with abandon.
That would be little Lizzy Bennet of Longbourn, only five years old and small at that, but giving as good as she gets, her ladyship thought with a smile. What a delightful child. So full of life and energy. I know that her being here playing with the boys would distress her mother, but having been a pampered and constrained child myself, I am vicariously enjoying her freedom. You will be trussed up into stays and fancy dresses soon enough, Lizzy. Enjoy the day.

Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Story
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

This is yet another sweet, clean, low-angst Pride and Prejudice Variation. This book of 64,000 words takes Elizabeth and Darcy out of their usual circumstances and meeting places. All of the usual villains are part of the story but minimized significantly. If you enjoy a light-hearted version of Our Dear Couple’s road to Happily Ever After, this may be a book for you. Excerpt: Mr. Thomas Bennet massaged his temples as his five-day-old daughter again woke and cried in hungry complaint. Warning: This is another excessively sweet, clean, low-angst story written from a decidedly Christian point of view. This novella of about 44,000 words is about the fulfillment of Elizabeth’s Bennet’s childhood wish to be Mrs. Darcy. Excerpt: The young couple joined hands as they stood together in the sun-filled meadow of the sprawling estate of Pemberley. “Dearly beloved,” the ceremony began, “we have gathered here to witness the joining of this couple in holy matrimony.” The speaker did his best to remember the words of the marriage service without the benefit of his prayer ...

Of Gates and Grace is a light, sweet, very low-angst novella of a little 39,000 words written from a decidedly Christian perspective. When Darcy and Elizabeth meet for the first time – or is it the second? – he mistakes her for a wood nymph. Excerpt: “Well, are you coming in?” After a pause, the gatekeeper, presumably St. Peter, repeated more slowly as if he was speaking to slow-witted children, “So are you two coming in or staying out there?” Darcy spoke first, “I don’t think I’m finished yet. One warning, two cautions, and a note: WARNING: In deference to a truth universally acknowledged that men do not behave the same when no women are present as they do in mixed company, this vagary does have occasional uses of profanity. The men in my life would consider it amusing but naïve to afford the same semantics of conversation for wholly different circumstances such as these, or they would should one of them choose to read it. This vagary proposes an alternate telling of the original Pride and Prejudice and considers what may have happened should the characters have been afforded a ...

She is semi-ostracized simply because no one seems to know how to treat her. That is, until Mr. Darcy comes to Hertfordshire. Mr. Darcy has never met anyone, man or woman, who has as much control over their magic as Miss Elizabeth Bennet. One warning, two cautions, and two notes: WARNING: Portions of this book focus on some of George Wickham’s worst crimes against young ladies. While the revenge taken is not fully or graphically detailed, it is extreme. “He had certainly formed such a plan, and without meaning that it should effect his endeavour to separate him from Miss Bennet, it is probable that it might add something to his lively concern for the welfare of his friend.” Pride & Prejudice, chapter 45 This vagary proposes an alternate path for the characters of Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is a charming little girl
Here we meet Elizabeth as a little girl. In this P&P version, the Darcy's own Netherfield and visit there annually. Elizabeth knows Darcy and Wickham from the time she was a small girl. She knows that Wickham is a nasty character and she thinks Darcy is wonderful, until she overhears him say something hurtful about her at a ball. The story progresses however and Darcy discovers Elizabeth's value. Quite enjoyable.

Time with Lady Anne Darcy
I like this author’s ability to change the course of the classic story by delaying the death of a character. In this version, Lady Anne Darcy lives to see Georgianna as a young teen. It was fun to see how she might have influenced all the characters we love to read about.
